Took my 2001 clk430 in because air wasn't blowing cold and aux cooling fans were not activating. Was told I needed a new compressor and receiver dryer and a (fan?) control module. They estimated a repair cost of $3250. I think this is high. Also, Is there a separate fan module or is it part of the engine control module? Help Please!
I had to add three cans of refrigerant to mine last year before it started working again. And it’s been working since. Cost was <$50 and is worth a try before spending that much for service.

Be careful of what you're being told, as our N22 HVAC controller is capable of providing the necessary diagnostic trouble codes , as well as the current HVAC system values, you'll need to repair it.
Following are Instructions to get both the diagnostic trouble codes and current system values.

When it says ignition on - does this mean with engine running?
It’s been a while since I last ran the trouble codes on mine, but I think it’s just ignition on with engine not running. Mine came back with low pressure, and the red EC light always on. Is your EC light on? What are your system pressures?
I took her to the ONE MECHANIC I TRUST IN ALL OF SO CAL who happens to be in Palm Springs. He fixed the 'lumpy idle' by re-attaching a vacuum line that had come loose. Secured it with a tiny hose clamp as well. He spent about twenty minutes going through and testing things and told me to take her to a place that can evacuate, vacuum test, and refill the freon as this might shock the compressor back into working. For this he would accept no money.
I took her to Jiffy Lube and signed off on a $150.00 charge for the procedure. Sadly, this did not work, but the guy at Jiffy Lube didn't charge me! He said that since it didn't work, they wouldn't charge me! If you're ever in Cathedral City and need lubing or A/C service, try the Jiffy Lube!
I need a new compressor. I was told to get the Denso. Found a new one online for about $350.00 (Clutch included). Just for grins, I stopped by the Mercedes dealer in Palm Springs and asked how much the compressor would be. Are you seated? $2200.00!!!! When I showed him the one for $350, he claimed that it was not plug n play. That the mechanic would need to jerry-rig the old harness to the new compressor. My trusted mechanic did not mention anything about this, so I'm not going to worry about it. I'll order the reasonably priced one and have it shipped to his shop. I'll go back next month to have it installed. And I'll have another mini-vacation!
