Yes, they do, it's called the A-class. M-B doesn't sell them in the US, yet. Maybe in 2004/5 after the next A-class re-design.

They currently sell them in Mexico so occasionally one can be seen in the Southwest.

And again, the new A-Class W169 probably will be sold in Canada and the US too.

Well, the A-Class is a question of flavor (Geschmackssache), same like the G-Class... The opinion about the first Mercedes Compact-Class in 1982, the Mercedes 190 (W201) was still worse than with the A-Class (and the A's interieur is bigger than the 190's one).
About the plane crash 12km above the Bodensee - I think it's not comparable to the A-Class The plane crash of the DHL plane and the Russian airliner is a real disaster. All my condolence to the relatives of the 71 victims!
Besides I've got a question, where have you heared about the crash?

I first saw it on TV: FOX & CNN breaking news, 1 hour after the accident, with realtime onsite interviews!
I thought that that the German online papers would have something,-- but NOTHING for another 6-8 hours later. All the papers featured the return of the German soccer team, calling them HELDEN, heroes. (For me the held was the goalkeeper!)
The online papers, which I checked were: Die Welt, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Stuttgarter Zeitung, Westline, and Bild online.

Interesting! I haven't checked the News that time (because it happend at midnight (local time) - that's why local German news haven't reported anything at that time...
But on TV and in radio stations it was the main topic all over Germany (The first time I heared of it was 6:15am on my way to the Zivildienst (civil service).
Well, now the online pages of the Bild Zeitung e.g. are full of the plane crash.

It happened at 11:30pm local time. Only 6-8 hours later did the local (German online papers - which I mentioned) carry this unglueck.
The headline - lead story - was the return of the defeated soccer team from Japan, greeted as heroes during this period till 6:00 - 8:00 am, when the collision dominated the lead story slot.

to be precisely, it happened at 23:35...
Well, that's "normal" - people at newspapers (especially online) usually do not work after 10pm... And when they start business in the morning, it's 6am or later.
You know, we have Gewerkschaften and such things...

I've forgotten:

ps:
All of our major newspapers have 24 hour shifts, online, which means - Nachtshicht (nightshift).
Because of the Gewerkschaften, you have a news-blackout daily, - from midnight to 6am. BAD!
