Option Prices here (some)...

Hi all,

I went to the Mercedes dealership in Portland OR to pick up the new CLK brochure. At the same time, my salesman gave me the prices for some of the CLK options. Sorry, it's not a complete list because i only get the prices for the ones I ordered.

K3: (Sunroof & Sunshade) $1375
K4: (Bi-Xenon & washer system) $1150
Integrated 6 disc CD-changer $400

Destination & Delivery $665

Still no price info for the car itself.

Jeeezus...Shades of the Porsche option lists!! I recalled everytime I ordered one, the base price mean't absolutely diddly squat. One of the more memorable deals was my '85 Carrera. $34,900 base... By the time I got out the door, I was pushing 50K (+taxes, etc.) and that was seventeen years ago. I can't say I'm pleased with what I see developing here. The only consolation is if MBZ allowed us the latitude the rest of the world has in specifying options...Don't think so.
My CLK 55 is looking more the "value for the $$$" with each passing day. ( Karl, you there??! )

I have to say that I was thinking the same thing. (near clk55 bracket) I also have a deposit down on a CLK55 (#3 spot)- I am wondering how high the price on that will be- w/ keyless go, etc. It will be over $70k for sure.

I know- This is something I don't quite understand. I understand that they don't want to take away from the "higher" lines but on the same token this should be a true sports car. They are putting paddles in it- keep the momentum and give us 18"s and the 450+hp engine, Benz!

I am 42 years old and have bought 17 cars along the way. I am big on buying the minimal options as they have the lowest resale percentage (Comand, heated seats, etc). I understand if you keep the car a long time that the cost gets amortized, but if you want the new, new thing it can be different. To each their own.

Here's how I ordered mine:

2003 500 CLK $52,200.00
DEST $ 665.00
K3 $ 1,375.00
CD $ 400.00
Gas Guzzler $ 1,000.00
Luxury tax $ 439.20
TOTAL $56,079.20

Regards,

Michael

Saving on gas guzzler tax

If you wait to take delivery until after end of year, I've heard the gax guzzler tax goes to zero since the law expires this year.
Anyone heard same or different?

The luxury tax has been scaling down since 1996 if I recall. I searched on Google and couldn't find anything about the gas guzzler tax expiring or sunsetting.

The inequitable part of it is that the SUV's and light trucks which have poor mileage are exempt. What a farce.

yeap most SUVs are exempt of this cuz they weight more than 5000lbs and if the cars weights that much it's not required to pay gas guzzler tax. Gas guzzler tax is not going away, it's luxury tax that goes away comletely next year.

Hi guys,

I'm confused about the Gas Guzzler tax now. Since CLK 320 has different MPG than the 500, is the tax also apply to the 320? CLK 320 is the one I'm ordering.

I researched a little bit from different web sites and it doesn't say whether the IRS is going to collect the tax from the buyer or the manufacturer. Does anyone know exactly how the process work?

Thanks!
Ben

I am not an expert, but it has to do with the blended MPG (city and highway) your car gets. If it falls below a certain threshold, and your car weighs less than 5000 pounds -- then you must pay.

The worse the MPG, the more you pay.

320 does not qualify. The 500 and 55 do.

Correct Brian; however my 2002 CLK55 AMG was close to $75,000 with all of the plus, plus, plus, plus, plus, plus --

Now, - that is a small price to pay, for the best car ever produced, since Karl Benz patented the world's first motorcar in 1886, registered his patent DRP 37435, which is considered as the official birth certificate of the first motor car!
