Post clk GPS disappointment...

The CD based navigation system on mercedes and bimmers are not very reliable. Why don't they use dvd nav??? dvds hold way more data than cds. I've seen the lexus nav, and it's like a million times better. The interface is well designed and they use dvds instead of cds AND it's touch screen! I just dont see why merc would overlook this area... There's no reason to overlook this, interface-wise is pretty easily/cheaply upgradable, it's just software, and it only takes small upgrade on hardware to use dvds...i dont get it, and there shouldn't even be much of a difference in price since dvd readers are becoming more common nowadays. I'm just whinning a bit here even though i'm all hyped up for my new clk...

I think BMW is switching over to DVD within the next few months. I know there is a delay of the current Nav systems for MB new model cars.. Do you think they are switching over to DVD?

Are the bmws really switching? I'm not sure about merc, my dealer told me they may have it in the next model... but again, if they were planning to do so, they would have already done so to the new models of c, cl, and sl class, and so as the new 7-series. I guess the car makers really dont care about it that much... the gps on the new range rover is as good as nothing... it is like running on a 16 bit display from the 80's, roads are displayed with small little straight lines instead of smooth curves and there is no color depth, needless to say the interface sucks. And that beast costs a good 70k, and the clk is only 50k. Given rover's decision to put such a crappy gps on its only jewel, i'm really not surprised if the navs on merc dont change for a while.

MB has already announced its newest Nav system which will be available in E-Class cars starting in Jan.

Not sure if it is touch screen, but it does have a 16X9 screen. It is DVD based and called COMMAND II. Currently scheduled to be available for all MB cars by mid 2003.

COMMAND -==> COMMAND II

Do you guys think that it will be easy to upgrade from COMMAND to COMMAND II? Is there a market for people who will purchase my mint condition COMMAND system? If I'd get at least SOME of my money back from the first system, I'd spend a couple hundred bucks to upgrade to DVD-nav.

Touch screens are not better. They show all of the smudges from your fingers touching them. Your fingers contians oils. Those oils get smuged on the touch screen. It looks disgusting. I'm with you on everything else except the touch screen

I've read that MB has specifically looked into making there command and command II touch screen. They've come to the conclusion that the system will not last as long using a touch screen.

Touch screens wear out much quicker than non-touch screens and MB's are built to last well past the warranty period, thus making a touch screen navigation system may be impressive at first, but down the road future owners of the automobile will pay for the lack of quality of a touch screen. This is acording to MB and has nothing to do with my personal opinion.

Theyve also press-released it as being in the facelifted S/CL class from MY2003 (well, they say theres a COMAND with a 16x9 screen)

I guess all in all it just boils down to the user interface and reliability, good news that they are becoming aware of it. Touch screen is really not that bad, and they are pretty darn durable... I'd rather have some spots on the screen than to have a crappy interface because there is really not many easy solutions to address the input interface. I wonder how the command II would turn out... I hope it's not the same knob dialing mechanism... i'm really not a big fan of it. man, they really should have equipped the new clks with command II, i dont get their marketing strategy...
