Attitudes on new CLK vs. new E
To my eye, the evolution of both the E and CLK to their new respective forms seems quite similar. Thus, I'd think that reactions to the new E and CLK would also be similar. But this does not seem to be the case.
I for one, really like the imposing style of the old E, but do also like the look of the new E. In some ways, I like the old E's look better, but I'm probably in the minority here. I also really like the old CLK, especially in AMG cladding. (Always wanted one, but I needed 4 doors.) The new CLK looks SL/CL-ish, is quite sleek and stylish in it's own right. For me, I like the new CLK and new E, but I also think the old ones are classic and set the original mold.
It seems, that the new E-class is a step UP from the old E-class, by judging the interior and exterior designs, echoing design elements of the S-class.
Whereas the new CLK steps DOWN, echoing stylistic features of the C-coupe.
I'll be participating in the E-motion - an MB promotion event for the new E - on Sept. 1.
I'll have a much better idea re the new E's appeal, after this event:
WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD!!
The whole styling of that car never worked right from the begining in my opinion and the update fell well short of fixing it.
The front light/grille/bonnet relationship was unharmonious with too many curves and the circles in the tailights on the original release where terrible, too Honda.
Thus the tailight shape was never repeated again(except on the CLK without the circles).
Bring on the W 211!!!!!
I'd also take the CLK500, as I have the need for speed. But only if it's available with the AMG areo package as a sport option.
But if price is the limiting factor, then you could also get a C32 AMG for about the same price as the CLK500 or E320. Decisions, decisions.

The CLK, on the other hand, is a sports coupe, and appeals to more of a niche market. Big difference, and it really is comparing apples to oranges.

Agreed, but if you had to say which car does what it was designed to do more thoughly, the E Class would take the honours.
