Attitudes on new CLK vs. new E

I find it very interesting that many current CLK owners are not all that impressed with the new CLK. While on the other hand, most current E-class owners can't seem to wait for the new E. Go figure?

To my eye, the evolution of both the E and CLK to their new respective forms seems quite similar. Thus, I'd think that reactions to the new E and CLK would also be similar. But this does not seem to be the case.

I for one, really like the imposing style of the old E, but do also like the look of the new E. In some ways, I like the old E's look better, but I'm probably in the minority here. I also really like the old CLK, especially in AMG cladding. (Always wanted one, but I needed 4 doors.) The new CLK looks SL/CL-ish, is quite sleek and stylish in it's own right. For me, I like the new CLK and new E, but I also think the old ones are classic and set the original mold.

2002 CLK 55 AMG Coupe ;)
Your summary is correct.

It seems, that the new E-class is a step UP from the old E-class, by judging the interior and exterior designs, echoing design elements of the S-class.

Whereas the new CLK steps DOWN, echoing stylistic features of the C-coupe.

I'll be participating in the E-motion - an MB promotion event for the new E - on Sept. 1.

I'll have a much better idea re the new E's appeal, after this event:

The front treatment of the new E is a million times better than the W210.

The whole styling of that car never worked right from the begining in my opinion and the update fell well short of fixing it.

The front light/grille/bonnet relationship was unharmonious with too many curves and the circles in the tailights on the original release where terrible, too Honda.

Thus the tailight shape was never repeated again(except on the CLK without the circles).

Bring on the W 211!!!!!

Let me ask you guys this..

If you had to choose between the CLK500 (W209)or the E320 (W211), which would you choose?

Hmmm... very interesting question.

I'd also take the CLK500, as I have the need for speed. But only if it's available with the AMG areo package as a sport option.

But if price is the limiting factor, then you could also get a C32 AMG for about the same price as the CLK500 or E320. Decisions, decisions.

You really have to take into account a number of things when comparing the two. I don't think that either car is flat out "better" than the other. Both cars are top of their class, and will get oogled at wherever you are. For a 19 year old stud like myself, there is no question that a CLK500 better suits my needs. Its MUCH sportier, whlie the E-Class is a little less sporty and more luxry. Sure the E-Class may have soem better technology and a little nicer finish work on the inside, but the E-Class is a mid-sized sedan, that is intended to appeal to the broadest base of MB's customers. Mercedes sells more E-Classes than any other of their models.

The CLK, on the other hand, is a sports coupe, and appeals to more of a niche market. Big difference, and it really is comparing apples to oranges.

Agreed, but if you had to say which car does what it was designed to do more thoughly, the E Class would take the honours.

Agreed. I think the new E will hit a home run in the intended market place (mid-size luxury sedans). Can't say I feel the same about the CLK vs. the intended competition (Sport coupes & GT's). Time will tell...

I saw the new E at the unveiling at my dealership on thursday- I liked it alot. It def. notches up the luxury a step. Loooks far more modern and sleek. The interior looked beautiful. I still would pick the clk500- and did for thant matter- but that is just me and my preference. The new E will look HOT in silver with the sports package as on the 500!!! Very updated!

Considering that the E-class is Mercedes' bread and butter (they sell more of these than any other class), I can see why more effort would be put into it's design.

Cheers, BT
