4-seater vario roof in future?
Does Mercedes really want to concede the 4-seat convertible vario roof market niche to Lexus? All Lexus has to do is extend the wheelbase on the SC430 to make the rear seats more useable (along with some obviously needed styling improvements) and Mercedes will have been trumped. Then again, maybe Mercedes is saving the vario roof for the E Class based coupe.

Thanks to Walter who sent me 3 photos he shot in France! I think DaimlerChrysler was going to shoot some pics for their pages Because the summer is nearly over - and pictures of a convertible in Winter term aren't that great *fg*

Here is the best one he sent me:

A great CLK Cabrio! Copyright by Walter!

Some additional pictures of an "Erprobungs-fahrzeug" you'll find in here:
http://wager.bei.t-online.de/CLKcabrio.html

And yes, the Cab will get a cloth roof - a friend have been to the Mercedes fab in Unter-Türkheim, Germany and saw 3 camouflaged Cabs... he knocked on their roof and he is sure thei'r aout of cloth!

They are both from the same angle - but from other distances... on one other pic you can see two french cars (a Renault Scenic and an Iveco transporter) and a photographer...

I've added the pic:

Weiteres gibt's bei mir auf der page... mercedes-wallpaper.com

Walter see it with top up?
Did your source Walter report that the cabriolet he saw had a hardtop or softop? Was he able to get close for a first hand look or were those telephoto shots?

Well, the roof has not been closed... and the DC photographs detected Walter, so he had no chance to catch more pics.

But my other source reported (as I've written a few postings above), the ne Cab will get a soft top! He just saw it in person in Unter-Türkheim (DC fab in Germany), and he had a look behind the camouflage. He wrote this:
Quote:
translated and shortened:
The secret is revealed!
As announced I was with DCX today and at this chance I had also times to look for an A209. Beside a W211/E55 AMG I also could discover two differently strong camouflaged A209.

I could examine them from the outside through the windows and I was able to touch them... my fist was sufficient, because the sound convinced me it had been a soft top. The more strongly camouflaged car had this kind of cloth-hood over over the real roof (as you can see at mbspy) - I closer examined the roof:
The Daimler jokers gave itself really large trouble, in order to cause such a confusion. Between the actual roof and the cloth-hood they put foam pads, in order to obtain the impression, the car would get a hard top, but there is no steel roof á la R171!

So I can insure: the A209 gets a cloth soft top!!!

Also the second car, which had not installed the cloth-hood (although a sticker was pinned on the center console, reminding the urgency of camouflage), you could see the cloth soft top. The roof and the large heatable back window correspond to the ghpixx.de-picture on mbspy. The switch for the top lies directly behind the shift lever. [...]

I hope I have brought the necessary light into the darkness.

209 cabrio gettin a cloth roof will really suck! i thought by losing its musculin bulky shape(208) the (209) will have something special such as the hardtop convertible to compensate that lost... guess not....is mb goin downhill or what?

Well, the design of the new CLK is a matter of flavor I love it, but similar to the current C-Class W203 in comparison to the W202 it's a new design... and you need some time to get used to And Mercedes is doing well with their Designs, like S-Class, new E-Class, SL and of course the CLK!

it's just as powerful as its predecessor!

i actually like both designs.... just that many ppl on this forum are saying the new clk is losing its muscular shape. It just sounded reasonble for the clk to have a hardtop how disappointing

just that i think a 70k plus car should deserve more than just cloth as its roof!

Just as I imagined... that CLK would NOT have a hard-top. I would have liked to see one on a CLK though - it would be a killer.

But, imagine the amount of metal cover that would be required for a CLK. A hard top looks elegant for a smaller car. On something like a CLK, I think it may look gaudy...

I think we should find an MB executive, and then string 'im up. And hit him with a board until they give us a hard top convertible.
