hi, my mother has a 2002 new shape clk320. when she starts the car there is a click of about 1 second intervals coming from behind the glove box area, or somewhere in the dash. i have a feeling its something to do with the climate control??? some times the clicking will last different lengths of time.

it sounds like a plastic cog slipping as if its trying to turn something that's reaching the end of its travel.

mum thinks its somebody stuck in there trying to get out and she is getting scared???

any ideas anyone?

Could it be the CD changer as that is in the glove box? Just a thought.

i dont think do its too loud and i have already tried taking the casset out and it still made the noise... it could be in the middle of the dash im not sure?

Im betting money on a step motor malfunction... a broken arm on the motor will make a click---click---click noise for a few seconds as the motor turns and the arm turning and hitting the stopper.

theres a few behind the dash, and they control all the climate control flaps.


i had this problem before, and i pulled my entire dash to figure it out....fix it yourself with a bit of DIY and some ingenous thinking and it will never break again. lol

going to mb and you will end up with a bill of about 1200 bucks.

Yeah, its a broken lever or something like that, in the heater box. It controls the vent direction (vent/floor). Mine does it, but it stops after a little while. I guess the replacement part is around $100, but its about 8 hours in labor to do it. My MB guy quoted me something in the ballpark of $1200 to repair. I told him that I'll just turn the music up if it gets on my nerves. It started about a month ago for me, and now, I hardly even notice it.

It's a common issue which in my case was replaced under the warranty.

thanks everyone! does anyone have any idea how to get to this"heater box" ?? do i take the glove box out?? is there a guide anywhere on the forum?

From what I understand, the dash has to be completely removed to get to it. That's why the labor is so extensive. I'm not brave enough to do it myself.

if anyone has removed a dash b4 i would really appreciate any pointers.

for example.. where any hidden screws or bolts are??

This symptom is consistent with the stepper motor/flap actuator breaking in the C class. A common failure. STFF the C Class forum for 'stepper motor' and you'll find several DIY posts. I don't know how similar or different the two cars are designed but it will give you a start of what to look for and be careful of. LOTS of pieces have to come off to get to the part in the C.

I have the exact same problem. The noise in my car is coming from somewhere behind the steering wheel. It seems like $1,200 is alot to get this problem fixed!

Read the DIY info posted by Racin Fool... it's amazing! This guy took the time to go step by step on the process and Liveniceguy posted all of the pics. It was like reading an aircraft T.O.!
Is there anyone out there that has the same type of techincal info for this process for W209's?
Kudos to Racin Fool and Liveniceguy for such a great post... wish it was relevant for the CLK-55 or W209 forum though

the c-class w203 is almost identical to the CLK w209...
i actually used his guide to tear out my dash to replace my step motors.

If you decide to do it yourself make sure you replace both footwell flap actuator arms. It requires you to take out the glove box side as well but it doesn't take long once you have it down that far.
