Brake fluid and transmission replacement - necessary?

Hi. I have a 2007 CLK 550 that I've owned for less than a year. I was offered a 25 point complementary inspections from my local dealership. It passed, however, they told me I needed to change the break fluid (never changed) and also the transmission fluid (including filter and replace pan) as I'd now done 40,000 miles.

Does $89 and $299 seem reasonable for these? They say these are "specials". Or do these even need to be done at all?

brake fluid is recommended every two years. $89 for that is a good deal. i just paid $150 at my dealer.if u plan on keeping the car and taking care of it properly, than i would suggest you do the trans as well.

MB recommends brake fluid every 2 years and tans every 3 or about 40k miles. You should definitely try to find an authorized shop and compare prices. Chances are the "Stealership" might be a little pricey

Sound like very good prices. Most likely they just suck out the trans fluid with a vacuum and refill for that price. That is a standard practice also on the oil changes at the dealer. You could get the fluid and do it yourself if you wanted to but for that price and if you don't have the vacuum it might not be worth doing yourself.

That's very good deal. I paid $350 for the tranny services @ 40K and flush the brake system myself.

I would hope they do it even at this low price. I guess I just don't trust the dealer. For example in Lexus RX330 they just flush the fluid and don't replace the filter just clean it.

Drain and fill replaces a portion of the trans fluid and essentially removes the fluid and contaminants out of the pan/sump. With repeated drain and fill, you can increase the % of new fluid vs old. Not something I would do given a full pan drop/new filter/new gasket option but many people and places do it.

Flush can also include detergents using external pumps or with just a transmission pump.

One needs to decide what type of 'replacement' they want and make sure what they will get. Trans service is not the same everywhere. Just make sure you confirm what you will get for the price.

Its in the back towards the firewall and visible once you remove the air box. One would also need a dipstick to measure or go by matching the amount of fluid you sock out.

Again, not my first option but some people choose to do this that way. Thats why I did on the lexus rx330 to refresh the fluid way before the scheduled maintenance as they can develop trans issues and the fluid does not cost much and the replacement was quick with the vacuum and I just did it when I was changing the engine oil (yes I changed the oil filter as well)

Not every car required the filter replace. Some car just need to replace/exchange the fluid only, even on some of the older Mercedes tranny so called lifetimes fluid.
