CLK550 transmission problems
CLK550 transmission problems
Hi, guys... I just joined the forum--found it because I was trying to find some answers... Here is my brief story... 2007 CLK550 (coupe)--had a 430--bought this one brand-spanking new. Always serviced at my MB dealer. 35,500 miles... started acting up, like someone that couldn't drive a clutch... (last Friday evening)....just took it in this morning... metal all through the tranny... new tranny needed! Forgive me, but I have never been a member of any forums and never really research problems with MBs (never had to). I was just wondering if you guys know whether this is a commom problem or not... 3 months out of warranty... It doesn't seem like it should be an issue at 35K!!! And no, I don't hot-rod the car... Thanks a bunch in advance.

Did they say what came apart to cause all the metal in the transmission? I just bought a 2007 CLK550 with 18,000 miles. I noticed a knocking from the right side. It is still under warranty so I took it to the MB dealership. They said there are two pumps on the transmission and that the forward one was knocking so they replaced the pump. I can still hear knocking but it isn't as loud. I would be interested to know if a pump is the problem. MB has been putting these 7 speed transmissions in for a while now and I don't know of any recurring problems. How much is it going to cost to fix? You may want to get it towed to an independant dealer, I would definitely shop around.
Thanks for your reply. I will know more tomorrow and will let you know. I am going in tomorrow morning for a "loaner" while we figure out what to do (MB customer service to help out?). This car was probably one of the first CLK550 coupes --ordered before they were even available-- and I am pretty much the only one that drives it... had a seat belt "sensor" problem, but that is about it!!
I remember reading on a different thread that a number of 7 speed transmissions have problems . . . . Do a little checking back through the threads - I think the thread was about all the known issues on these cars.
Do you, by any chance, remember if this was on a CLK thread?--I am not very "forum savvy."
My memory isn't quite accurate. It was a thread called "Common problems with CLK 500" first posted on 1/16/11 (sorry, don't know how to link threads). Although it ostensibly was about CLK 500s, there are a lot of similarities with 550s. And there was discussion of the 7 speed box. Good luck!

The latest... They will take it apart to figure out what broke (think it is a waste of time since it is obvious it needs to be replaced). Approximate total cost to fix would be around $7K. MB will pick up the cost on parts, we pay for labor. Torque converter to be replaced also. If you still hear knocking, get it checked--I would say that is an indication something is not quite right in there.
