Brake Work Question.

In the next few week I'm going to do the following in my back yard:
  • Change my rotors to R1 Concepts Premium (Slotted and Cross Drilled) Front/Rear
  • Put in new OEM Brake Pads Front/Rear
  • Bleed my Brakes.

Just 3 questions:
What is the best sequence for doing the above?
  • Change all my pads/rotors, then bleed my brakes?
  • Or change my pads/rotors and bleed my calipers one wheel at a time?

How many brake sensors do I need to buy (front/rear; part numbers)?
Is the Mercedes Brake Grease sold separately (part number)?

Thank you Gentleman!

When I changed I didn't need to buy any sensors. Always do the entire brake job then bleed one corner at a time.

You're going to love the R1's with stock pads dude!

If the brake light in the dash isn't on, you shouldn't have to change your sensors.

If you never change it before lets replace the sensors this time and thats it from now on ...no need to do it again if you going to change the brake pads next time. Thats just me.

Edit: what kind of pads are you going to use ?

The only time you need to buy new sensors is when the light in the dashboard has litten up, only then you change the sensors
I think you need 4 sensors. Correct me if im wrong guys.

Change all the pads and rotors and then bleed the brakes.

Its just 2 sensors anyway.. One for the front and one for the rear. They assume that both rear and both front wear at the same pace.

Unfortunately the W203 sensors appear to be different than the W208 sensors. The W208 sensors cost about $1 each. The W209 sensors list at about $10 each at dealers and about half that at regular suppliers. At a buck a pop, I always buy them. At $10 a pop, I’d be inclined to reuse them at least once. On a W208 with the non-AMG rear brakes, there are two sensors, both in the front. The last CLK500 I saw had two up front and one on the passenger side rear.

For bleeding the brakes, I’ve done it while doing the pads. However, if you do it that way you have to change the brakes in the same order that you would if you were just bleeding them – right rear, left rear, right front and left front. Are you going with ATE blue?

My factory pads didn’t come with grease. I use CRC (available everywhere) on the backing plates and a little bearing grease on the pins

Sounds like a plan Kev.

Change them all, verify they're functioning, then change the brake lines and brake fluids.

Thanks for replying Marcus! I will be going with ATE blue this time around.

All with stainless steel brake lines,
I want to order SS brake lines this weekend, but I'm not sure which model to use. I know Wes mentioned that he had some Stop Tech lines, but had to get Brembos because some of the lines Stop Tech lines where not long enough.

So could anybody give me a brake company/model number/vendor for Stainless Steel lines for a W209 CLK500?

TIA!

That was only when I switched to the Brebmbo BBK up front. The bigger calipers required the longer lines.

I know auto anything sells the stoptech SS lines. Also DC Performance is listed as a Stoptech vendor, you might want to give them a call.

You probably already knew this, but on the chance that you didn't, you're going to need a hammer. I use either a three pound or a five pound sledge. The rotors are not coming loose without one. (fighting off the urge to post useless hammer pictures - MC Hammer, Fred-the Hammer- Williamson, Hammerhead sharks, Thor's Hammer, hammered coeds, etc)

Thanks Wes, it mall makes sense now! As promised, my brake write-up is going on your website first before it comes here.

Thanks Marcus, I had a feeling that the rotors wont come off easily.

BTW Everyone, I found the part number of the Brake Paste on Wes's parts thread:
Brake Pad Paste: 001 989 10 51

Awesome! Nice find on the brake paste. $1.20 is pretty cheap.
