2005 CLK 500 convertible top making noise

I just purchased a 2005 CLK 500 convertible. I think I got a good deal. 22,500 miles, spotless inside and out. Seems to have been well taken care of. I paid $25,500 plus $3000 for a 2 yr waranty. I do have a question that hopefully some can shed some light on. I have never owned a convertible. I realized quickly that when you hit a bump the windshield kind of shimmies. I can understand that because of the lack of support by not having a solid roof. But now, when I hit a bump the roof where the top meets the windshield makes a loud squeaking/rubbing sound. Is it something that can be repaired or tightened up? Is this common? Is this just the downside of having a convertible? My opinion is that a Mercedes should not be making this noise which is very annoying. I can understand a little bit of noise when you hit a substantial bump, but this seems excessive. Help would greatly be appreciated. Please feel free to send comments to Steve1024@comcast.net

There are adjustments/moving parts lubrication that can be done to the top by mechanics. Though I would first try lubricating all the rubbers, particularly points of rubber contact of the top with the body. I have found Einzsett Gummi Pledge very effective - you'd be surprised how squeaks and rattles can be eliminated/reduced.

+1.
I recently purchased a similiar vehicle ('05 500 Cab with 26k mi) and had the same issue. I received the same reply to this question and a little lubrication did the trick.

Oh, and welcome tothe club!

My wife has a VW Beetle 'vert that squeaks like a 1987 Hyundai. I used the Gummi stuff but it wears off very quickly and the noise comes back. The VW dealer uses some special grease of the seals of the EOS to eliminate squeaks and leaks that they tried to sell me for $98.00.
They parts guy told me (by accident) that it a Du Pont patented lube oil called Krytox. Long story short, with the help of the internet I found the same stuff at GM parts direct for about $40 (PN: 3634770). It sounds expensive, but it is really worth it.

You apply it with a small brush (I use the acid brushes from the plumbing department at Home Depot) and let the stuff really soak in, at least and hour and overnight is even better. It works great. I put it on the seal between the front and rear side windows on my coupe and have not heard a squeak from them all week.

Go to http://www.gmpartsdirect.com and search for part 3634770.

Here is a lot more Krytox info if you have nothing to do:

Hi Steve! Welcome to MBWorld and to CLK ownership. I'll "ditto" what everyone else said. The CLK's top is generally very quiet thanks to great MBZ engineering, but as the rubber seals age, they do get hard and will make noises, especially in colder weather. MBZ sells a cleaner and a lubricant. I think they are about $60 for the set. Personally, I don't think you need to spend that much to solve the problem. I clean mine with microfiber cloth and soapy water. I then follow that with a rubber treatment, usually one of those tire dressings applied with a sponge or cloth. It usually lasts a few months before needing another application. Maybe the more expensive stuff lasts longer, but I can put a lot of coatings on mine with a $5 bottle of Eagle One, and it only takes a few minutes. Oh, and the easiest way to do this is use the fob on the IR sensor to open the top to the point where you can access all the seal.

I recently sprayed lubricant in the hole (contact points) and she doesn't screech any more...

Thank you to all those who replied. I still have questions. I must admit that I am not very mechanically inclined. After lifting the top I noticed a few things. Thee is rubber stripping that runs the length of the windshield. Is this the seal that everyone talks about that needs lubrication. I want to be sure before I lubricate. I also found a small round piece of rubber, about 1/4 in diameter that is on the top near the latch. There is a rubmark where that meets metal. I was wondering if I put a piece of felt in between that would be a problem or not. Replies aprreciated.

Yes, you need to lubricate all the rubber surfaces. The strip on the top of the front windshield, plus all the rubber on the top itself. Don't use felt - it will only peel off and make things worse. If the round rubber latch pads are worn, replace them.

Krytox is somepretty expensive stuff. Ranged from $29.99 and up. I was able to purchase on Ebay for $24.99 for a 2 oz tube. I'm hoping it will do the trick.
