$675 for spark plug replacement???

Just had my 2004 CLK500 in for service A. I was told that spark plug replacement was recommended at 5 years or 100,000 miles (I have 48,000) miles and was told the cost would be around $675.

This dealer has not ripped me off in the past (as far as I know), but this sounds like a crazy *** price to replace spark plugs. I told them no.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

I changed my spark plugs every 100k km (CLK320, V6)

They were changed last year:
Parts:. 12 * $11 = $132 CAN
Labour:. 1.9 hrs; $215 CAN

Then add tax.

I was quoted a ridiculous price like that on my ML430 at the dealership.

Went the DIY route on the 16 plugs and wires in the driveway in about 3 hours.

(Got to remove the wheels and inner fenders on an ML or risk get blindly gashed on a razor sharp heat shield among other scalpel like objects.)

Saved a load doing it.

Yep, removing the fender shrouds was the way to go on the W163. On the W209, you do it from the top. My advice is to remove the coil packs. It makes it much easier to see what you are doing and gives you one less thing to bust a knuckle on. A decent shade tree mechanic can do this in a few hours. $675 is definitely way too expensive!

You definitely need to remove the coil packs if you don't have the plug wires puller tool. I didn't have wire puller but were able to do the job with open end wrench. It not that hard but anyone want to try doing it yourself, start with the 2 back plugs first. If you can remove those 2 first, the rest is very easy.

Not sure on your driving habit, your mileage seems low to change the plugs.
If you do not feel any deterioration of performance or fuel economy, maybe you can wait 1-2 years.

My understanding is spark plugs do not fail all of a sudden. I would change them only when I feel somehting wrong.

The reason to change at 5 yrs is the "electrolysis" that occurs between the plug and head somewhat bonding them.

As for cost...
Need more info...parts costs and labor rate/ hours.

Is it 8 or 16 plugs? 16 x 10 = $160.
Labor rate? $150 x 3 = $450.
Shop Supplies = $20.
Tax = $18.

how about $1000?

mb chicago quoted for my clk55amg

of course i do not negotiate with terrorists....
the plugs were very pricey but when autozone runs a promotion you can get them at a good price.
as previously stated, the back two are challenging especially if you have big hands. coil packs just need to be detached, not removed

$435 for the 6 cyl at RAB Motors in Marin. PM me if you want the link or a contact. Also, you can google around and find specials, and ask your dealer or indy to match.

LOL! Right on with removing the rear plugs first. I have a pair of pliers that is perfect for removing MBZ plug wires. They came in a set my wife bought for me at Costco years ago. This particular pair is a large offset ringnose. It perfectly grabs the bulge on the end of the plug boot. It makes it really easy.

As for the concerns over the electrolytic bonding, I've changed plugs that have been in engines for well over 100K with no problems. These plugs use gasket washers and not the old style tapered seats so that helps out a lot.
