Engine serial number is 479566 beyond the range of affected engines (up to 468993) so you are fine pertaining to the balance shaft issue.

Does this mean I will not have a balance shaft problem?

Based on the serial number, you shouldn't have it.

WDBRF92HX7F876643 has M272 engine #479566. That is beyond the range for potential balance shaft failure.

No, the C240 uses the M112 engine. A MY2005 C240 should be a great car - solid M112 engine and 722.6 transmission, plus it's the "facelift" interior which is a bit nicer.

Yep, M273 #71246 is in the range. Are you having any issues? Pull codes and see if you have P0016/P0017 - yours could be fine as only a small percentage actually fail.

No issues, that particular car is a possible upcoming purchase. I'll be sure to bring my OBDII bluetooth dongle. Does the smart phone app Torque work with these cars? Thank you for your help.

Oh, if you are buying, my advice is this: If buying from an MBZ dealer, get them to promise in writing that they will cover the repair if it fails within 150K total vehicle miles. If you are buying elsewhere, negotiate and only buy if you can bank about $4K compared to a comparable car not in the affected range. Otherwise, skip it and find one not in range.

Thank you for your advice. I'll be buying it from Carmax and they have their three day return policy plus I'll be getting their excellent (from my own experience with an '05 GTO) warranty. If there's any codes, it's straight to the MB dealer.

Really looking forward to this, as it will be my first car paid for in cash. No more monthly payments for this guy.

PS - Is there any way to tell which paint code the car has from the VIN? All I know is that it's black.

The paint code is "040" which is plain, non-metallic black. Here's the full data card:

Thank you sir, very informative. Anything seem unique about that car? Seems like a standard CLK 550 with P1 package, but my knowledge of unique Mercedes isn't up to snuff yet.

Well, WDBUF87X48B238014 is a MY2008 so I am sure you have no worries with it in regards to the balance shaft, but just in case - it's M272 engine #753513, which is well beyond the affected range.

I think you asked this on benzworld and I posted the datacard link there. A MY2004 should be a good car. Check the valve covers for oil leaks, but even so, that's an easy fix. Check the transmission electrical connector for leaks, but again, an inexpensive repair (maybe good to couple that with with a fluid and filter change for the transmission). Other than the typical wear/tear to look for on a 10+ year old car, everything else should be good.

2008 Mercedes R350 4matic

Hey Rodney,

I have read almost all of your posts....good stuff alot of great info. I have a 2008 Mercedes R350 4 matic. My indy tells me that the timing solenoid magnets are bad (all 4) he also says that the intake manifold needs to be replaced and that "there are many other codes showing up". My VIN is 4JGCB65E08A070176. Do you think this would have anything to do with the balance shaft issues on these cars, and does my vin fall in the range?

I appreciate your help!

Ray

Your R350 has M272 engine #754155, which as expected with a MY2008 is beyond the range for balance shaft issues. But, it is still in the range for troubles witht he camshaft adjuster solenoids (a.k.a. "cam magnets"). These parts are about $100 for all four, and the labor is maybe 2 hours (and a fairly simple DIY if you are so inclined). This is covered in the TSB under "Scenario 2". Some dealers will cover this under goodwill. As for the intake manifold, there are some reports of failure with it, either cracks or broken actuators for the variable-length baffles. The manifold does have to be replaced as an entire unit, though some enterprising DIYers have repaired the broken parts themselves. My only caution about that repair is there have been reports of broken manifold pieces entering the engine combustion chamber and causing sever problems.

Hi Rodney, I am considering buying VIN #: WDBRF52H47F881670 and was wondering if this car would be in range for the balance shaft issues. Any other words of wisdom to be on the look for as well would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
