No, they discovered the flaw early in the MY2007 build cycle, so only about half of them are affected. But a MY2008 would pretty much guarantee you to be beyond the affected range.

Ok...I continue my search for E280 2007 unaffected one.
Thanks again Rodney!
Have a good weekend with your awesome ride!

Tom, your car, WDBRF52H97F919877 has M272 engine #574505, which is beyond the affected range. My comment about the flaw affected half the MY2007s was directed as Sean. Sorry for the confusion!

WDB1714562F035074 has M272 engine #009861, which is definitely in the range. BTW, I see that has a September 2004 delivery date. That would be one of the very early new MY2005 R171's. They were the first models with the new M272 engine.

MBUSA will goodwill the repair sometimes. I think a lot depends on dealer contribution. If you bought the car new or CPO from a dealer and have had all work done at the dealer, you might have a shot. If you bought the car from a used lot and it;s never been serviced by a dealer, then probably not.

Hi Rodney
The sales dept. said they were not aware of this problem and have instigated a repair at the local MB garage, apparently free of charge! I will not be buying this SLK!
Thanks again for your information

Dealership sales staff are notoriously ignorant of issues like this. I don't blame them, though. Most car sales people are not "gear heads" - they are just sales people and learn just enough to do a basic job. I rarely, if ever, find a sales person who knows more about the car I am buying than me, but what I really hate is when they just seem to know nothing.

Actually, if they do repair this car, then why not buy it? The repair is permanent. If everything else is in working order, it might be a good deal. Then again, my other concern would be that this car has a very early version of the 722.9 7-speed transmission, and they tended to be more problematic specifically with respect to bad speed sensors. But, you could have them check the VMI to see if that was ever repaired. Again, that would be a permanent fix with revised parts. That's one of the good things about MBZ repairs with revised parts - they typically fix the problem for good.

Thanks for your response. I have to say that I was really tempted to buy but at the back of my mind "have they put it back right!" Bodily it is in excellent condition for its age but you say the early automatics were problematic. Unfortunately I'm a bit of a perfectionist and like thing as they were originally. I have decided to downsize to a 200 of which I have looked at one in as good condition with just 40000 on the clock. It's going to be used as a 'fun' car at the weekends as we have a Tiguan and a Up!as our main means of transport.
On another tack - how do you find out the original spec, including extras, for a particular model?
Thanks again
Richard

EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog) which is part of SDS, has the data cards for all cars. I have a "Chinese clone copy" of SDS that's good through October 2010.

I recently purchased a 2007 C230 Sport and I'm wondering if it may be in the range to have balance shaft issues? Can someone please check my VIN? Thank you.

Hi Rodney,
could you please check my car VIN 4JGCB65E87A043919. It's a 2007 R350, CEL going on now and then with code P0016. Car performance is normal and I hope it stays like that
Thanks a lot!

Thanks Rodney. My car has just over 80k miles and is in the range to have potential balance shaft issues. Is there a recommended mileage to have the timing chain and gears replaced or do you drive it until you get P0016/P0017 and then see about repairs?
Thanks

I am in the midst of buying a 2007 CLK 280. I would REALLY appreciate if you could check if this VIN number is within the range of balance shaft issues?? Greatly appreciate your prompt response and also the expected cost to fix those issues. P.S. I am in Hong Kong.
VIN: WDB2093542F236113
Engine Number: 272940 30 658946

There is no recommended mileage - just drive it until you have problems. That might be next week, or years from now with over 300K on the clock (which would then be considered "normal lifespan").

A MY20006 ML350 is most certainly going to be in the affected range - yep, M272 #365725.

That engine number (30-658946) is beyond the affected range. M272 engines are through 30-468993. Note that when posting here, I usually drop the "30-" prefix and just list the last 6 digits.
