W209 facelift Command
Guys ,
I just bought this command (haven't got it yet) and I want to know is this Euro or US version? I mean can u tell by the part #? OR ? I have posted a few pics below and another question is how do I know which gps antenna that I need to buy and where exactly do I need to mount it ? Im assuming this will be plug & play after I got the antenna?

Looks like a US model (no TV button). As for the antenna, any standard NAV GPS antenna with the proper connector should work. I'd mount it as "horizontal" as possible, and not obstructed. I put an aftermarket NAV in the C240 and mounted the antenna on the dash, actually magnetic, stuck to the center grille on the dash.

No, it just needs to be for the proper COMAND unit. Of course you'd want the "latest" to be up to date. My advice - find someone selling a used "genuine" disk from 2011/2012 on eBay. I think the CLK, C, ML, R, G and GL all use the same NAV disk. Also, I think there may need to be an SDS-applied firmware update if the COMAND is pre-MY2007.

There are urban legends that each new NAV DVD "updates" the system and they must be installed in successive order to work. No truth to it. No more than you must play every alubum by an artist in order so that your DVD player recognizes the music. But as Rodney said, get one for sale on e-bay. If you buy a brand new one from MB or NAVTEQ, the place that makes them for MB, they are about $250, but are out of date by the time they are packaged. So live with it being a bit more out of date and stay a year behind for about $70. Although I have to say I have not seen many recent discs on e-bay lately. If there are not any, resist the temptation to get an even older one like 2007. They are way out of date. I'd spend the $250 before I'd do that.

Andy,
Funny that you're upgrading your radio because I just did mine tonight. I looked everywhere behind the old factory radio and I couldn't find a GPS antenna. So I just purchased one of these.

Mine came with a 2007-2008 disc in it. PM me and we can discuss.
Kyle.

When I did a Comand install on my car, the STAR service manual said to install the GPS antenna behind the gauge cluster. There is a section in the service manual for this retrofit. You will need the interior removal hooks to pull the cluster out. Also, you will need to get your car recoded with the STAR diagnostic to have the GPS direction instructions show up in your gauge cluster.

I did the Audio 20 to Command update in my 2005 just a few months back.
When I powered it up the first time it already had a 2009 DVD in it. (On EBay now I think)
I have since gotten a 2012 DVD, can't tell much of a difference, the icon for "You" is now a circle with a triangle in it that show direction of car.
If you haven't found a good how too, there are one or two with pictures.
The toughest part for me was the top piece above the Head unit. Hard to get sufficient grip on it without being tempted to jam something large behind it.
I was also putting in an Ipod kit at same time so I took advantage of having right side of passenger panels out. I ran the Blue FAKRA connected GPS antenae ($10 on Amazon) up above glovebox. Crucial to get it as high as possible and make sure nothing metal above it. First placement jammed behind head unit resulted in ZERO (0) satelittes, no function.
Once I moved it above glove box, started working. Take time, apyattention to the how to's and you'll be fine.

Hey guys I am selling My older DVD ver 2006.1 to Andy. I wanted to make sure it worked for him so I loaded it in the DVD in my car and it says its a older version than what I have now and will not work any longer. Does anyone know how Andy can tell what version was installed on the unit he is buying ?

He might find a version number in the engineering mode of the Comand. On the Nav screen, try one of the key combos below and it should take you into the engineering mode. The OK'+'7'+'Mute' combo worked for me.
Kyle.
