He is talking crap. You have a 722.6 transmission not an early 722.9 transmission where this was the case.

I really worry about your dealer & their lack of knowledge of these cars.

Tell him to diagnose properly & only change the conductor plate if necessary. You do not have to change the valve body unless it is damaged which is extremely unlikely.

You have an external TCU.

I know the valve body sits on top of the conductor plate but I am not sure what it does. So it is hard for me to dispute with the SA.

For what I have read, there is no need to reprogram after replacing the conductor plate for 722.6. All the smarts are in the TCU.

The SA also said the conductor plate and valve body are VIN specific which is wrong. I called the parts department and got a quote without mentioning my VIN. I only gave my year and model.

The SA is unlikely to admit that he misinformed me. This is very frustrating.

The conductor plate is effectively a printed circuit board that connects all the sensors & solenoid valves that operate the valve body to the TCU plug.

The valve body is a hydraulic system that shunts fluid around to lock up & release the clutch packs that engage different planetary gear sets & control fluid flow to the torque converter etc.

I am kind of stuck.

I can get this fixed and robbed by the dealership. In the end, the car will drive well.

Or I can go to my indie and ask him to change the conductor plate which will include a pan flush. He is familiar with 722.6 but he is a Sprinter guy, not MB. The price will be much less but I am not 100% sure if the car will drive well afterward.

If he knows the 722.6 well then replacing the conductor plate should be easy for him.

Get someone to read the transmission codes & post them here.

I would have no compunction to tell the SA that he does not know what he is talking about.

The same indie pulled the codes 2 weeks ago:
P2203 The internal electrical of component Y3/6n3 (speed sensor 3) has filed.
P220A The speed comparison Y3/6n2 to Y3/6n3 is implausible.

He has a box with the MB logo; he connected one end to a laptop and the other end to the OBD port. He was able to pull the codes (above) and cleared them as well. Not sure if this is the proper Star SDS.

I probably worry too much. I am concerned that the implementation of 722.6 maybe different in a Sprinter than a w206.

It is the conductor plate. No difference in Sprinter implimentation. Just a different TCU map due to high diesel torque.

Maybe I have caught the SA off guard. He is used to getting feedbacks by the tech after a proper diagnosis. I read up on MB transmissions and there are major differences in replacing parts in 722.6 and 722.9.

Also, he probably is more familiar in 722.9 than 722.6. To replace the conductor plate of these 2 transmissions are different. In 722.6, the older transmission, there is no need for adaptation.

It sounds like that Sprinter mechanic has SDS and knows the 722.6 (The same SDS system is used fro Sprinter and all MBZ vehicles). I'd go with him instead of the dealer who seems to have some incompetent SAs.

You guys are right.

If I get this fixed by the dealership, with any luck, the technician assigned to work on my car may be misinformed as well and concur with the SA. I will then have to pay for unnecessary parts and unnecessary reprogramming.

I will talk to my indie tomorrow and see what he thinks.

I continued my research and I found an excellent post over at benzworld with the title: Photo DIY- 722.6 Conductor Plate and Regulator Valve Spring R/R.
Very informative post with lots of pictures. He also replaced the Regulator Pressure Control Valve Spring. He said this spring is a common failing part, causing rough shift between 1-2 and 2-3.
It looks difficult to remove the conductor plate, one of the valves was stuck for him.

I called the indie today and he would give me a quote later on. He said he had changed the conductor plate before for Sprinters.

Yes ~ while open it is a good idea to check all solenoid springs etc. for breakage. If your guy knows 722.6's I'm sure he will do this as a matter of course but just ask him to check!

So far, my transmission went into limp mode 5 times. The last 2 times were last Friday (Jul-5) and yesterday (Jul-10).

This morning, I went to get the following parts from the dealership:

Conductor plate: 140-270-11-61-2
Spacer: 203-540-02-53 (13-pin connector)

Will go to the indie for installation early next week. The indie will supply the ATF, gasket and ATF filter

Thanks.

I am a bit worried because I did not have a proper technical diagnosis. All I did was to pull the codes (P2203, P220A).

Also, I usually go to the dealership for repairs. I go to this Sprinter guy for regular maintenance works. One other time I went to another indie to replace the wheel bearings was a complete disaster. The guy put the seal inside out, ie, put the magnetic side the other way. I ended up with all kinds of malfunctions afterward.

I am of the opinion that the technical diagnosis is as much as the dealer would have done.

What? But they charge $125-$175 for the diagnosis.
In the dealerships here, customers are not allowed to go into the garage.

Yes ~ They are charging you that to connect up a Star & search for fault codes.

Fortunately here I'm allowed into the workshop as long as I sign an indemnity & don't get in the staff's way. I monitor everything they touch on my car. These cars are damn expensive in SA & hold their value.

My dealership is owned by MBSA & they have the attitude that when you buy cars from them you own a couple of bricks in the building. As a technical person I find this very refreshing.

Our dealers have strict rules against allowing customers in the shop, but they seem to break that all the time. Even before UI worked for them, when I was having problems with my W163, they would take me into the shop. Since I've worked there and still know most of the staff, I usually just walk in and say hello to my old friends.

As for the labor cost of just doing a simple SDS scan, I can tell you it does take time. I would say an hour of time is about average (that counts intake of the vehicle, SDS, paperwork, and a car wash).

Yes agreed ~ it does take time.

We have very nice dealerships here. Easy to afford at our pricing & Benz high market share. See mine from post #97 here:

BTW ~ have changed those Alpaca Grey mats in my car for matching Basalt Grey items.

Replaced the conductor plate today. Like usual, the indie was extremely cautious and super clean.

I looked at the conductor plate. It is a piece of black plastic with a white circular thing (speed sensor). Hard to imagine this costs $470CAN.

The car drove great afterward. So, the SA at the dealership was wrong. He said without the proper "adaptation", the transmission would shift funny or would not shift at all.

Last time my car went into limp mode was 12 days ago. So, I will not know if this procedure fixed the problem right away. Will report back in a few days.

Yes ~ Siemens/Benz get rich on those things. All the circuitry connecting the sensors & solenoids to the TCU plug are contained within that piece of plastic.

I'm sure your car will be fine. Super clean is what working on these transmissions is all about.

I told you your SA was talking crap.

2006 clk 320 cdi avantgarde
Hi,
Gents,

Baran from United Kingdom, after having same continuious problems on my clk 320 cdi 7 g transmisson I had to pass all these steps to get to the bottom of the problem with the Elite Auto MB Specialist in Kingston upon Hull. Fault codes are same as you have described on your quote and they quoted gbp 668.00 including labour and oils etc to change the valve body to solve the limp mode problem that i have been experiencing since march this year. car stayed there 2 weeks we waited the part from MB Germany etc. They changed the valve body then gave it back the car to us but when giving technician guy said i expect the same problem to appear again and if it a because we have suspicions about the units coding to the system. had 60 miles journey on the next day, had limp mode 4 times during the journey and took it back to the garage for further treatment, they have spoken with MB dealier about the part and they admitted that part might be faulty and replaced again, but it didnt managed to pass the coding and they had 4 ours of technical discussions with Germany Mb Technical team to sort it out put the car on Star diagnostics and connected to the MB server to read from top to toe and finaly admitted that it is a very common problem on all CLK series has 7 g transmission on it and all TCu unit has to be replaced to solve the problem. which costed me another Gbp 441.00 to add on to the current bill.
Parts received on yesterday from the dealer and they are changing the full unit and promised to give the car back to me on friday or latest Saturday,
Fingers and everything crossed and waiting to take the car back all in working order,

I will post the result over the weekend when/ if i got the car in one piece all working order,
Thanks,
Baran
