Maybe Im just missing something here but why is the SL500 priced some 25K above the CLK 500 when it has the same engine? Whats the big difference besides the roof and some design features?

Well its smart marketing. Thing is, THEY CAN. The SL500 has a stitched headliner, stitched dashboard, better suspension, better seating, LED tail lamps, a RETRACTABLE ROOF....really not the same car. $25K more? probably not that much more in cost, but hey, its not outrageous either. Taken as a question its a legit question, but I would be there are those out there that will say the SL guys paid too much,...which is the same argument corvette owners use on vipers. Basically if you can, and you want it, then why not? Personally Id rather have a CL500 than my CLK500.

Because they are in a different class period. A W209 does not have the class of a R230.

The C320 and the CLK320 have the same engine...

MB also makes a S320 (350 now) as well as an SL350. Engine size has nothing to do with the main pricing structure of a model line up.

SL350 also doesn't have the air suspension as on the SL500.

I have nothing against CLKs but you simply can not compare both cars even if the engines are same? SLs are all about the image, prestige and tradition of Mercedes Benz. Add to it a tradition of over 50 years of a one of the most successfull model lines starting with the amazing SLRs and SL Gullwings and Roadsters and you should understand. That little vents on the fenders are supposed to remind people where the roots of the SLs are and why you will never have it for a price of CLK. Actually even back in the days the 300sl Gullwings were using same engines that were put in the 300se sedans of that time only slightly modified and with better injection. It makes no sense to count what an SL has and CLK doesn't because SL should not cost the same what a CLK cost although I would not mind.

Is the ABC option not there anymore? I heard there were availibility issues.

Nope, it's still got a nice suspension setup but not the hi-tech gadget ABC, don't think it's got to do with availablity issues, I guess it's to keep the cost down but it's still over AU$200k.

I would imagine that since the CLK and C use the same platform and interior bits the cost for making a CLK is much cheaper than an SL.

i think the sl500 is way much better than the clk500, dnt mind me am only 14 so i can come out with alot of erm, stupid things but anyways, SL's are better than Clkz i rekon dey proper cool, my sisters getting a SL350 which is not so good but she gona put the AMG kit on it if she thinks shes gna keep with the car, if shes deciding to get a better SL then no she wunt put the AMG kit on, Ive seen the picture of it and it looks good, clk's are good too but not as good if you get wot i meen ciao!

ha very funny! but anyway-will the car be worth anything once the AMG kit is put on? Cuz i heard that most people dint like buying cars with a body kit on it cuz its worth nothing...that true?
