Strange howling sound from engine bay
Alright guys, put your stethiscope on and help me diagnose this noise. I will attempt to describe it. It only makes the noise at start up and sounds much like a fan going a million rpms. After about 30 seconds or so, it quiets downs and sounds normal. Other than that, the car drives and sounds fine.
Is this sound normal or something to be concerned about?

The engine suction fan can sometimes kick on high speed. When it's cold (both engine and ambient temps) the secondary air injection pump can kick on. If its one the way out, it can make some noise. I'd open the hood and observe the suction fan. If that's it, then it's normal behavior. It does this on hot days when the AC kicks into MAX COOL mode.

Got the same issue but mine is getting really loud. You could go def putting your ear up to it, ZZZzzzzzz...... Like you said it only comes on for about 10seconds on cold starts. What's the purpose of a suction fan anyway?? I didn't know these had turbos

Dont worry too much about it, its very normal to make that sound in the morning. my dad drives an ml350 and the secondary air pump is pretty loud in his engine compred to mine, its been that way for 5 years no problem. I think they are just loud on the m272 in general. Good advice here would be not to change anything until one day it doesnt turn on anymore, you'll probably get a check engine light by then.

really wish i could get my engine that clean.. i've tried and its impossible.. i took out the valve covers and manifold and got some gasoline to get the dirt loose and i could barely get the valve covers clean.. the manifold was just a lost cause.

I spend an average of 5 to 6 hours every weekend detailing my car (A bit OCD). Buddy of mine runs a hi-end detail shop. When I get home I'll PM you the products, tools, and process I use. My engine bay looks as clean, but some spots are beginning to show their age. For the most part you can get it looking as good if not better than the photo - but it's not a one time thing. If you want a concourse quality car it takes a lot of work, and constant attention.

i'm pretty similar in that respect. I've probably paid too much money on interior parts just because they had a small scratch on them.. problem is nobody imports good quality cleaning products into the country. Recently i discovered a guy who sells "Tanner's Preserve" leather cleaning products. I'm really enjoying using that. other then that just 0 off the shelf products that really work. There are a ton of Sonax products all around the country but i feel like most of the time its fake because it really is ****.

Understand your dilemma. I spent a significant amount of time in The Lebanon many years ago. I hope Bayreuth is on the mend, what a beautiful city. Would like to visit again someday, and to visit the small towns in the Chouf mountains.

you shouldn't visit now, as that will deeply ruin your memories of the country.. sad sad story with all the garbage lying around.. government cant come to agreement to terms about who and how the garbage should be disposed off as the last private company's contract expired and the municipalities are in over their heads with dealing with all the trash. God help us..
sorry about the stolen thread guys..
