Vibrations at higher speeds
Hey guys -
Car info - 2003 CLK320 75k miles / Have owned the car for the last 15k / Second owner, well cared for.
So, when rolling along on the highway at higher speeds I'm feeling a vibration coming from the suspension (I believe) - I can't determine if it's the front or the back. it's not a vibration through the steering column, more like a wave feeling throughout / no droning or awkward sounds coming from the trans.
I've read about the issues with the Torque converters going bad on the 722.6, which creates a rumble strip feeling. The vibrations are not that intense. I installed a set AMG reps F:17x7.5 / R:17x8 after the previous owner let me know one of the stock alloys had taken a "knock" and was slightly bent - Which parts should I be inspecting to figure out the issue? Control Arms, struts, tie rods, bushings, or all of the above? I've already had my tires rebalanced and rotated with no improvement / had the alignment done 4 months ago.
Thanks guys!

I wouldn't rule out the wheels if the vibrations were not present before you changed them. Was the balancing dynamic or static? If balanced using a dynamic method and a wheel is difficult to balance, it could be because of a crack in the wheel.
It might help you narrow your search if you could safely shift to "N" and let the car coast for a few seconds from highway higher speeds.

im with fatz on this one..if its at higher speeds only, more than likely wheel balancing or tire issue (uneven wear). engine and tranny mounts would be felt at idle as well

I had a droning sound which would come on while on the highway. I wasn't sure if it was coming from the transmission or suspensions or wheels.
Long story short it was caused by coolant getting into the transmissions due to having a bad Valea radiator which leaked coolant into the transmission cooling lines.
I would suggest you look into that since your car is a 2003 model unless the valeo radiator inside it has already been changed to a BEHR one. Visual comparative picture here: http://i50.tinypic.com/2ev7v9x.jpg
If it's not that, then you're most likely going to have to start looking into suspension parts and bearings.

Thanks!
Thank you everyone for your replies / Turns out Fatz and Amir were right on the money. when I had my tires "balanced" and rotated a short while back, they only rotated them yet charged me for both jobs - Terrible! Anyway, I took the car into a shop with a dynamic balancer and they let me know all 4 wheels were way out of balance. They corrected them and all vibrations are gone. Thanks for chiming in everyone, this forum is always a huge help.
