replace or repair transmission

When I gas the car I hear a rattling noise that I initially thought was the catalytic converter. I had it lifted up and verified it is not the catalytic converter but the sound is coming out of the transmission. I took the car in to a guy who basically told me it is something in the transmission that it needs to be rebuilt- approx $4k. Looking around I see plenty of transmissions for about $700. Would it be better just to swap out the transmission in this case? I ask in case I'm missing something about MB that would complicate things.

No, not yet. That could be an option to look for a better price. I think what I am looking for is,

- Price of used transmission + installation (is it something I can DIY).
-- I've seen transmissions for less than $700
-- How much would installation be? Can I do it myself? There is a Benz dealership nearby, along with mechanics that work on Benz in the area.

- Price of repairing current problem
-- Can I fix it myself?
-- How much should I expect to pay?

I do have a garage with space to do the work myself. I have plenty of tools and do not mind buying more to get the work done within reason.

Forget doing either a swap or repair yourself. Does your tranny work ok? Usually if one makes a noise that loud it also is not working correctly.

The transmission is fine...it just sounds like it doesn't. It makes this sounds like making a rattling noise you hear on low rpm and gets drowned out on high. It sounds bad to me because I love the sound of the engine.

The mechanic that was trying to diagnosis the issue wasn't very exact about what the issue was. Something about the transmission bearing.

I think I'm going to take it to get diagnosed by MB.

Going to MB will be the most expensive route. They can read tranny codes, but a bad bearing or flex plate will not throw codes. I might try an independent MB place or a good tranny place just to see if you can get a more reliable diagnosis.

I'll check out the flex plate locally at an independent shop.

https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class...isc-plate.html

According to this thread you need the car on a lift to diy. Unfortunately, I do not have access to one.

NO LONGER ACTIVE
Does it do this in park/neutral? If so, I'd lift the car and use a mechanic's stethoscope to isolate the exact location.

I agree with the other guys. I run a transmission shop. Dont go to a general auto repair for a diagnostic.
it does sound like a broken flexplate. If there are no codes and working fine i doubt its the trans.
As for a used trans. i have done allot of them on mercedes for auto warranty companies. They want the cheapest route. If you find out it is your trans and you want to go that route message me. I will tell you what company to buy one from. They are national company and give the best warranties on their products. Its the only place i buy used parts from

Thanks. I'll jack the car up probably today to take a look at the flex plate. I'll determine then if I want to attempt it myself.

I'll also be cleaning the MAF and replacing the air filters. The car has been bogging, dropping rpms and almost turning off. I want to address that also. The idea is to replace the plugs, wires, clean MAF and replace the air filters and see how the car is then.

I jacked up the car today to check the flex disc (not flex plate) and it looks fine. I noticed fluid on the transmission, but i don't think it is recent. I'll take this to a transmission guy when I have time. In the meantime, I will be working on the spark plugs & wires, replacing seat belt retractor and valve cover gasket.

I remember the guy i bought the car from said he serviced flex plate, but the guy who said he fixed it and has it under warranty said it is not the issue. Long story short, I had the car at his show for almost 3 months and could not even figure out the. My guess is he was jerking me around and didn't want to work on my car and would rather work on cars coming in for insurance work. So here we are...same noise and still no idea what the issue is.

The noise can be pinpointed to around the firewall at the passenger side leg area, towards the center console.

List of things to work on seems to grow on this car. I have everything else under control but this noise worries me.

i think you should use your phone or something to post a video so people might get an idea of how bad the sounds are.

your really cant visually inspect the flex plate unless you remove the transmission.

I inspected the flex disc, not the flex plate.

I have the car in the garage until the seat belt retractor that I ordered comes in. Once I have that installed I can take out the car and record the sound that it makes.
