New TSB for Faulty Fan Wires Apparently
The engine cooling fan on my '04 CLK55 suddenly got "stuck", and the ear-splitting roar wouldn't stop. At the same time, unclear if related, a main engine control unit "blew a fuse". The car has been in the shop a week now waiting for a replacement unit from Germany (it has to be "matched up" with my engine?).
There have been a shocking number of minor mishaps that seem out of place in a car in this league. Side view mirror falling off, front fog light and back light falling off, windshield wiper that totally missed cleaning. Plus a "Safety Recall" for seat belts.
The early TSB requires replacement of the engine control unit and installing an adapter harness between the fan and the main harness. A new bulletin came out just saying to install the adapter harness, not the control unit.

Is either TSB for early 04's and what does the adapter actually do?
Any other TSB's we should be aware of?
Thanks and regards,
Hey Dave, how have you been?

The TSB applies to '03 and '04 models, I don't know the exact VIN cutoff numbers. As far as the adapter, I'm baffled. It's just a 4 or 5 wire, 7 or 8 inch long adapter harness that connects in series between the fan and the main harness. It might contain a resistor, but that doesn't seem to me like it would cure the problem of the fan coming on when it's not supposed to. It made more sense to replace the engine control unit too. I've only fixed one CLK with this problem, and it was when the TSB wanted to replace the control unit AND install the harness, which of course fixed the problem.
There are other TSB's out there, but there are far too many coming out every week to remember what they are for and what cars they pertain to.

I remember when I got my 03 209 it had a bad vibration when the fan went into full speed, the shop foreman said they had a way to reduce the highest level of fan speed which also reduced the roar. I believe they were able to do this via the MB laptop but I don't remember the exact details.
Sorry to hear about the avalanche of the TSB's, thanks Schrempp!
If you happen to see any we should know about please post.
Thanks.

And can I get a idea of if you guys get them done or do you wait untill there is a problem with the car that pertains to the specific solution?
Is this TSB only for the CLK 500 or is it also for the CLK320?
Thanks,

is thetre a website where i can find out all the tsb's
There is, unfortunately, only dealers have access to it. If I find time, I will print out the list and make a thread in the tech section with 209 TSBs.
It only applies to the CLK500 and CLK55, coupe and convertibles.
