2005 CLK 320 Soft Top stuck in down position

Hello all,

I put the top down last week and had the car in the garage. I now need to put the top up and nothing. Just get the dreaded "Top See Workshop" or something like that message. I can hear some clicking in the doors and the side windows do move up and down if I double switch up or down. Roll bars are down.

I opened and cleaned the 2 relays right next to the soft top oil reservoir, but still nothing. Hard to check if the relays are clicking as the trunk needs to be shut.

I can't seem to find where this microswitch is.

Also, only fuse for the top is the one located next to the driver door and it's good.

Any suggestions if I should just replace both relays and that microswitch if I can find it, lol. Or is there something else I can check before I start ordering parts? Oil level is fine, btw.

Thanks,
Leo

If the pump is not operating, the see this thread (there is another fuse):

https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class...tion-mode.html

If the pump is operating, but nothing is moving, then it could be a bad limit switch. In that case, i have a diagnostic aid (still a work in progress) that might help:

Thanks for this, yes I don't hear the pump at all. I saw the pdf but that black/white pic doesn't show exactly where this "mega" fuse is. Can you give me some direction on location?

Ok, found the megafuse and it's fine. Even used a jumper just to make sure, same thing, nothing. I was able to manually get my top back up but it keeps saying "Top being opened" and I cannot open my trunk unless I use a key. I opened the cover again and saw a small micro switch in pieces, removed it and tried both wires disconnected and jumped, no difference. Microswitch on the passenger side looks and operates fine.

If I disconnect the passenger side switch, will that help that message? Really at a loss here, the more I mess with it, the more it get confusing.

So which microswitch is broken? Is it one behind the headrest (S84/22 or S84/23)? If so, you need to replace it. Part number is the same for either one (A2098201910).

Yes, drivers side broken. I tried jumped and unjumped, same results. I guess I might as well replace both and both relays.

Got a question tho. The W208 uses 0025421319 when the W209 uses 0025421419. Are they interchangeable since the 0025421319 is half the cost.

Thanks,
Leo

No, they are not interchangeable. Check these sites for the best price+shipping (strip the A prefix off the part number for searching):

Ok, cool. Will get the exact part for my ride. Also, will this be reason for my error message that my top is still opening? Seems to be related why I can't open my trunk without the key.

Also, can't tell if I even got the relays in correctly. The one in front, I removed without looking how it came out, but the one behind it had the spade facing toward me, so I just followed that for the reinstallation of the front one. If that makes sense, lol.

Bought the relays and switches from https://www.shopmbonline.com/ . Thanks for the links as it was a lot cheaper then going to eBay.

That list I've been compiling for a few years is all genuine MBZ dealers that sell parts online at a discount. No one of the them is always the cheapest on every part, nor on shipping, so it pays to check each one. I have pretty much stopped buying parts on eBay or Amazon unless I want cheap Chinese stuff. Even when listed as "genuine" brand names, they are often fakes. And even when they are genuine, the sellers have to pay the hosting fees, so that's shy these dealers who operate their own stores can be a little cheaper.

Yes, if there are unexpected combinations of microswitch readings, you'll get an error message. And if the soft top controller doesn't register the top fully locked up or down, it locks out the trunk. As for the relays, I think they only go in one way.

Good to know. I'll report back when I get the new switches and relays.

Rodney…is the last stage of the opening sequence not that the windows move up and close?
