Hi,
Just noticed when I raise the roof on my 2005 CLK, there is a small piece of material sticking out between the rear window surround and roof, I am able to push this material back in.
So far I have been told I need a new roof, I have also been told it can be glued back in. So basically I am looking for the best advice if you can help, Thanks Harry
Seems like it's common problem with "water bags". There is a repair kit from Mercedes, it's around $150.
Here is detailed video (unfortunately quality is not very good) how to fix it
Hi, Thanks for replying, luckily I don't have a leak, just the material sticking out as per the photo, looking at the video, it is not something I could undertake.
Yeah, that part is complicated, I think that it's one of the reason they used this construction of the rear glass only for w209 and w207, for newer C-class convertible Mercedes went back to construction similar to older w208 CLKs.
Although you don't have leak, but sticking out part is still a water bag and it's happening probably because one of those elastic straps is broke of. Replacing the roof is going to be expensive unless you can do it yourself, the roof itself is about 1k ("Robbins auto Top": aftermarket, but very good quality) and labor to install it probably between 1k and 2k. So I'd try gluing first
My roof had a similar looking problem on both sides of the window surround. I went to a local convertible top specialist and he said an internal strap on each side was broken. He was able to replace the two broken straps and get the excess roof material back in place for $100.
Every once in a while my convertible shows the same symptoms. I stop the roof 1/2 way to relieve tension, coax the material back in with a plastic body tool (Harbor Freight has them) and continue the roof cycle. It's usually fine for months at a time.
I'll have to peek inside & see if I have those straps that need to be replaced
