Uh oh? 2004 CLK320 Tranny Issues (P0715)

My 2004 CLK320 Coupe just threw a CEL and code P0715. It's stuck in C (Comfort) and appears to stay in a single gear (2nd?) regardless of speed (haven't tried to go over 30mph yet). Revs just keep climbing. The car has about 135,000 miles on it.

Have you experienced this?

Yep - just had them pulled and here’s what came up:

P2203 - Y36n3 (Speed sensor No. 3 is faulty)
P220A - Speed comparison of Y3/6n2 to Y3/6n3 is implausible
P2066 - fault stored in component N15/3 (EGS controller). (OBD 2 code P0715)

I hear this can be one of the sensors on the conductor plate or an oil-soaked TCM. Any other possibilities?

I purchased a Foxwell NT610 Elite diagnostics tool - solid device. I cleared the codes manually and the car came out of limp mode. It did go back into limp mode a couple of times almost immediately (hard shift, then Active Gear on the Foxwell read "IMPLAUSIBLE"), but the car's been "fine" since my last code-clear 100+ miles ago. Looking at the live data, speed sensor 3 appears to be behaving normally. Here's what I observed:

-Sensor 3 reads 0 when the vehicle is stopped. Sensor 2 shows speed/RPM when the car is in Park or 1st gear and the vehicle is stopped.
-Sensor 3 shows speed/RPM when in motion in gears 1-4. The reading appears to lag Sensor 2 a bit when initially taking off from a standstill (not sure if that's a quirk of the Foxwell or actual behavior). Sensors 2 and 3 quickly sync up once the vehicle is in motion for a few seconds.
-Sensor 3 reads 0 when in 5th gear. Manually shifting to 4th gear, Sensor 3 shows speed/RPM again (synced with Sensor 2). Sensor 2 always shows speed/RPM while in motion.

Is this the expected behavior?

It appears that the sensor behavior described above is normal. One clarification - Speed Sensor 3 reads 0 in first gear, so the apparent “lag” was just the lack of a reading before the car shifted into 2nd. Sensor 3 also sometimes shows a reading in Park, seemingly dependent on what gear the car was in just before (seems to show a reading when the car is in C and in 2nd at a standstill).

After about 200 miles, the car went back into limp mode with the same faulty Sensor 3 code. The live data showed that the sensor was reading 8000RPM fixed and the current gear suddenly became “IMPLAUSIBLE”. So, the 8000RPM reading is the failure mode for this sensor, not 0. I cleared the code and the car came out of limp mode and has been good for another 150 miles.

Will drive more to see if I can replicate the failure.

I had the conductor plate replaced and it fixed the issue. The cost for an independent shop to do it was just under $800. The reader was $200.

Thank you. Replacing the conductor plate solved the problem. No need to replace the valve body or transmission fluid pan.
