Prior to my previous post on the reliability of the CLK

I saw the car I was interested in a black/black CLK 500

12k miles


First problem, the drivers side door had a terrible rattle when the window was rolled down, up when rolled up it was gone, sounded like the door would fall off.

I drove it, I think the car does have good power and the transmission is great the MB 5 speed is one of my favorites for an auto.

But the car feels like a Sponge, the steering very vague, no feedback and it pulled very badly to right, which was a common problem i heard, on the highway the car to me just didnt feel too safe compared to my previous car the S Type R.


The car feels just like the new 211 E Class, but I assumed that since the CLk does not have the Airmatic Suspension it would not feel this way.


Im not impressed one bit and I dont think any aftermarket upgrade can fix this, the lower control arm bushings and the front strut setup is causing this feeling of uncertainty. Too much deflection


I drive very agressive and feel this car would make me lose control.

The car was is decent shape but needed a good detail but I notice something odd.


the cars engine bay and exterior did not show signs of only 12k miles., very dirty and alot of powdery white residue on the motor.

I carefully noticed the dash area around the cluster and it shows evidence of tampering,

I know 100% someone electronically rolled this odometer back, it is possible and I know how it gets done. Come On its NYC,

So this car is ruled out


Im going to go drive a 2005 CLK 55 and see if it feels that much better.

I'd say to find a better used 500 and dump the money into a full Kleemann setup and some coilovers. I'm not sure what your expectations are about the handling, but the handling with my PSS-9s is significantly improved over stock. I hated the stock handling too.

I told you to look for a used 03-04 W209 CLK55 as they are selling for some very attractive prices.

I believe its fairly easy to change the mileage but the cars ECU has a seperate recorder which can only be accessed by MB and cannot be rolled back !

I have a friend who is claiming she has an offer to buy a CLK-500 AMG for 38k...while I know it's bull$$$$, can someone tell what CLK's are selling in that range? I'm thinking it would have to be CLK320, and maybe like a 2003, right?

The clusters come pre programmed with the mileage from MB. Basically if you can get it to work you can get a lower model cluster and swap it in and the miles will show what the was on the cluster.

LOL, out of all the ways to do it, the one you mentioned is def not the only way nor preferred or easiest way to do it!

Thanks for the info...I hope the guy looking for a CLK appreciates it. These are all dealer prices so he might find a better price via private owner. I know the prices offered to the seller of used 209 55's are much much lower...the resale has not been very strong but the dealers sure try to make it seem as if it is when THEY try to sell them.
