Thumbs down '06 CLK500 Cab v '06 CLK55 Cab

I just saw a brand new 2006 CLK500 cab at my job and guess what? The exterior looks exactly the same from the AMG kit, to the AMG exhaust tips, to even the rear lip spoiler I mean come'on, doesn't MB want their high performance models to look a little different. I know BMW GmbH does. All the new CLK500 is missing is the ///AMG badge on the decklid

How come the AMG body kit is a $4,950 option on the E500 but the CLK500 gets it as standard equipment? Why would anyone spend an extra $20K in a CLK55 cab just to get 60 more hp?? It doesn't make sense.

My CLK is my first MB but I really feel bad for all 04/05 55 Cab owners, I mean they don't even get a quad exhaust

MB should at least have put the kompressor on the 2006 CLK55, I mean come on they upgrade every trim line except their best? It does not make any sense.

I love my car but I am disgusted on how MB has whored out the 2ndG CLK-class. I mean no wonder 03s and 04s can't hold their value. I had an 2002 Lexus SC430 and model year 2006 is the first time they have changed it at all. I know German cars are the best but this is really leaving a sour taste in my mouth.

I mean who in their right mind would spend $85,000 on a 2006 CLK55 Cabriolet, you must be smoking crack!!!

what I don't get is why the coupe has quad tips while the cab has twin tips only. Wouldn't it make sense like every other model in the AMG family to have quad tips so it will stand out. That's really one design flaw that I don't understand. The quad looks so much better.

I think that's a trunk space issue. Not enough room in the cab version to run the second set of pipes, and still provide some version of a rear trunk that will hold a few golf bags.

A CLK cab with quad tips would be sweeeeeet...oh wait, it might detract sales from the SL55

I dunno about other ppl, but for me the driving experience that CLK55 provides is the most important thing. I test drove a CLK500 with AMG sport pkg. The car looked good (and quite similar to CLK55) but didn't give me the exciting driving experience that my car gives me. Although feeling special with a separate body kit would have been a plus, I bought this car because of all the goodies that are under the skin. Buying a CLK500 with AMG kit would impress bystanders but would never put a smile on my face when I drive it. After all, I bought this impressive machine for my driving pleasure and not for spectators' visual pleasure.

The SL55 looks pretty darn close to an SL 500 amg pkg except for the rims, same for the E amg pkg vs E55, CL amg pkg vs CL55 and even 65. MB prefers discreet touches.

MB initially thought the quad exhaust was just too loud for the CLK cab.

I hear you and agree. But in answer to your statement why would anyone pay extra for the AMG, you are completely ingnoring the severly upgraded performance mechanicals and interior appointments of the CLK55 AMG .

I just traded in my wonderful CLK500 2004. I loved her and it was a quick car. However, in my new CLK55, the engine, the build quality, the suspension, steering, mighty brakes, awesome exhaust sounds, sport seats w/ bladders, paddle shifter, interior design are MAJOR improvements that will appeal to the genuine gear heads and motor heads.

If you're a real car guy, than only the AMG will satisfy fully. If you want more, than buy a tiny Porsche. My C4S was superb but had NO DAMM space inside. Too narrow, and no storage. The Vette is just the same. Only the M3 BMW and the Audi offer a comparable vehicle. I had too many repairs with BMW and Audi. I am sticking with MB and am very, very happy.
