hmm, it didn't make sense that MB would make two keys with different ring
attaching points so i looked at my keys again, then contacted 5 friends,
across the US and Canada. all are the same. my bad. all have retractable
loop as e1000 described. so.......it *is* possible for the blade key to be
removed w/o unfastening the keyring from the blade. sorry for the bad
info and induced whiplash.

yes, as deguitarist says, OEMPARTSDIRECT shut down their web entity.
their meltdown started last Summer after Jaime left and the business took
a downturn. there is a possible alternate source for Smartkeys through
the Web, and reported to be

http://www.parts.com/oemcatalog/inde...archCatalogOEM

...using the same part #s

i've not seen m/any posts of success to-date as this source has been a
relatively new mention. Smartkey costs reported to be about $120

lol - I didn't know I was going to cause an international incident!

Again, the other weird thing is that some keys don't have the retractable ring at all.

simply slides through both holes.

what you don't see is that on the flip side of the Smartkey, a release switch
allows the bladed key to be un/locked when needed.
on my key when the blade is inserted it pushes the built in ring inside, i believe mercedes added this so that when people take their cars in for service they like to remove the bulk of their keys because they need them, before when the blade key wa out the dealer did not have an easy way os attaching a key identifier tag to the key, with the built in ring they now do.

Angry I am being ignored?

I mentioned the site was down earlier to da guitarist, and no answer.

I asked about would this key work with Keyless Go, and no answer.

I know I asked earlier, but asking again, will the key work from this new link?

http://www.parts.com/mercedes/mercedes-parts.cfm

Appreciate a response, thanks in advance. I went by the dealer, and they more for the keyless go key, around $279!

i put that the site was down. dunno about keyless go, my car isn't that new.

ok, if you type in www.parts.com and press enter, their website comes up. there is a box where you can type in the part number. the part number for the key is on the first post (on the first page) of this thread.

often when you paste a link to a very specific item, it goes to that site, but because of the website coding you won't go to that specific item. Hence, you have to manually type the part number in and do a search.

If I were you, I would just go to the dealership and get one there. They will order you a new style key that will work with Keyless go.

Does the key have to be virgin for the dealer to program it? Can the dealer reprogram a used key?

I called about the Key and working with Keyless Go to oempartsdirect. Turns out, they want the same price as the dealer and he stated that key part number would not work with the keyless-go, so now I have to go to the dealer. Blah....

RBM of Atlanta, has again given me prices cheaper than other dealers but it is still about $270. Oh well, I will get it when I get my rear brakes done in a few weeks. I wish this would have worked and saved me a small bundle...

stupid question.....
have been reading through this entire post once again, and believe my dealer gave me some incorrect information. they told me if i was to order a new smartkey AND blade (with the blade being cut for my car) -- that because of the shape of CUT blade it would not fit into the NEW chrome key. For example - i order both parts and they ship NEXT TO each other in the box, because my 2005 car's blade (that was just cut on a brand new style head) will not fit into the key. is this correct or incorrect?
PS. i have OCD and far over-analyze simple things.......
THANK YOU!

Sorry I didn't see your question but - YES, if you go to your dealership, you can get the new style keys. Actually, if your car is still under warranty, and one is cracked, you can have it replaced underwarranty with the new style key.
