2001 CLK55 Catalytic Converter.

Hi All,

The right side exhaust catalytic converter in my 2001 CLK55 coupe is damaged, rattling out of control and requires replacement. The Mercedes replacement part is approx $6500. Does anyone have any alternate ideas or aftermarket recommendations? Is it possible to obtain specs on the catalytic converter to enable matching to an equivalent aftermaket part?

Thank you,

AT.

Just my 2 cents, but any high flow cat should work for you. If you aren't set on the MB specific cat, I'd go to a good exhaust shop, they could should be able to find a high flow replacement that should fit & work fine.

Your car might still be under warranty. I heard that the cat is warraty up to 7 years/100k. Check with your dealer, its and emissions part.

Assuming you're going to pay for this out of pocket, I would replace them as a pair with metal substrate converters. A pair of metal substrate converters from a quality supplier will have much higher flow numbers than the OEM cats. You'll probably have to get a muffler shop to install them as I haven't found anyone who makes a bolt kit for any Mercedes.

Next to the prices you quoted, they're practically free - less than $500 a side plus installation.

Catalytic converter.

I believe the Federal Law for the EPA warranry (include the catalytic converter) are 8 years or 80K miles (whichever come first). Run (don't work) to your nearest MB dealer to have check it out before 8 years is out. I did for wifey's car (only over 40K miles) for free. Good luck.

if you are on the market for a catalytic converter, as long as it is one of the rear ones, I have one for sale. It is off my 01' CLK55, and is in great shape. Let me know if you interested. You'll be saving MEGA bucks...PLUS you'll be using OEM equipment =)

call me (408)469-6849.

2001 CLK55 Catalytic Converter.

Thank you to everyone for responding.

If possible I will try to organise a second hand OEM replacement and keep the car original. This will also be a good option as aftermarket cats are round and will sit too low. The original items are flat bottomed. There seems to be a large difference of opinion in various workshops and Mercedes dealer as to the effect a non standard/OEM catalytic converter will have on the cars performance, etc. Some say reduction, some improvement and some no change.

Thanks again.

That's because there are different manufacturers of catalytic converters. If one gets a substandard converter, they will experience substandard performance. The same applies for tires. One can expect poor performance from a set of cheap tires, and as good or better performance from a high performance set of tires.

Mercedes-Benz does not make catalytic converters. They are sourced to a Mercedes-Benz spec. Exceed that spec and you may notice the difference. In the example at this following website, a difference was noted. The only change made in these two dyno runs were the cats:

http://www.nicksforzaferrari.com/forzaferrariwebsite1_057.htm

The difference in performance was an increase of 31.3 HP at 6000 RPM, an average increase of 27 HP from 4500 to 6500 RPM, the peak HP went up by 13.8 HP, torque was increased 36.6 ft-lbs at 4700 RPM and torque increased by an average of 27 ft-lbs from 3500 RPM to 6400.

The point is, you won't go wrong using an OEM factory cat, but you could do better.

............Please do not spend 6 grand on a catalytic converter. Go to ANY exaust shop and get one for $400. I will hurt for you if you make the mistake. Where do you live? if you live close to atlanta, I will personally take you to the shop that replaced mine, and I am not known for having a slow car. CATs come in different sizes and shapes and flow rates. This is really a no brainer. Run away from your dealer immediately!!!!!

Ted

Has anyone heard from CLKAL lately? He took my money, has not responded since and has not sent the parts he offered in this post. Does anyone have any information about him? Thanks.

I jumped the gun, CLKAL was not contactable. He has responded and sent the cats. No issues or wrong doing whatsoever. I want to clarify that everything is fine.
