2001 CLK55 Catalytic Converter.
The right side exhaust catalytic converter in my 2001 CLK55 coupe is damaged, rattling out of control and requires replacement. The Mercedes replacement part is approx $6500. Does anyone have any alternate ideas or aftermarket recommendations? Is it possible to obtain specs on the catalytic converter to enable matching to an equivalent aftermaket part?
Thank you,
AT.
Next to the prices you quoted, they're practically free - less than $500 a side plus installation.

If possible I will try to organise a second hand OEM replacement and keep the car original. This will also be a good option as aftermarket cats are round and will sit too low. The original items are flat bottomed. There seems to be a large difference of opinion in various workshops and Mercedes dealer as to the effect a non standard/OEM catalytic converter will have on the cars performance, etc. Some say reduction, some improvement and some no change.
Thanks again.

Mercedes-Benz does not make catalytic converters. They are sourced to a Mercedes-Benz spec. Exceed that spec and you may notice the difference. In the example at this following website, a difference was noted. The only change made in these two dyno runs were the cats:
http://www.nicksforzaferrari.com/forzaferrariwebsite1_057.htm
The difference in performance was an increase of 31.3 HP at 6000 RPM, an average increase of 27 HP from 4500 to 6500 RPM, the peak HP went up by 13.8 HP, torque was increased 36.6 ft-lbs at 4700 RPM and torque increased by an average of 27 ft-lbs from 3500 RPM to 6400.
The point is, you won't go wrong using an OEM factory cat, but you could do better.
