If I had to pick, though, I'd say the ///M

I have driven a DINAN E39 M5 my friend owns. The M5's even stock have major clutch issues and I smoked it with out even trying. So with a little luck you will run up against one of these. Game over CLK 55 WINNER

Dragtimes.com has the E39 M5 running all kinds of times - most are within a tenth or two of many W208/55 runs (stock vs. stock).
It would be a driver's race. As Owen mentioned the E39 apparently had a tendency to bog off the line, so unless the owner is willing to sacrifice their clutch, a W208/55 would have a strong chance of winning as long as you could hook up.

Yeah, this guy with an E39 M5 wanted to run me one of these days. I said sure knowing he would probably dump his clutch at 4-5k rpm. E39 M5's are fast but they are hard to drive fast by the average driver IMO.

I raced my buddy with his e39 m5 with my CLK500 and beat him 7 out of 7 times. Of course, he can't shift for his life and his clutch was on its way out
They're supposed to be pretty fast cars. Would be a great race.

That having been said. YES they are a very fast car. Get one wound up and get it on a fun twisty road, (which is what these cars were built for not drag racing) The M5 is a pleasure to drive. As are our W208 CLK55s.

What do CLK55's trap in q/m? A well driven E39 M5 will trap 108 no problem. I think the gearing of the M5 also comes into play. At lower speeds I'd say it'd be a close race b/w the two cars, but at 100+mph I think the M5 has an advantage.

Mine is stock down to the air filters. I've trapped 109.00.

For a stock W208/55, the best ET I recall was around 13.2X or 13.1X. Check dragtimes.com for more info on that.
As far as "average", I don't know. The other W208 CLK55 tested last fall in Atlanta (same day/same dyno) tested within a couple hp of me. One thing is for sure....W208 CLK55s are under-rated by at least 20 crank hp, according to the pro drag folks I've talked to (based on 1/4 results using weight, ET and trap speed).

13.349 @ 109.00 with a 2.15 60' Our cars have significant traction issues. BTW, this was with 35psi in the stock tire size (245s in back), 1/2 tank of fuel and a full trunk (no spare, etc. removed). Stock air filters. Had I been 'serious' about the effort, I would have played with the tire pressure and emptied the trunk, but may have only netted another tenth and perhaps one more mph in the trap. I'm 198lb as of this morning.

One of the track days in Louisiana next week will be configured for the drags. Since we've got the track to ourselves, I'm hoping to better my previous time.

CLK55 w/ weight reduction mods... forget about it. You can take 150-200lbs out of a CLK easy and that would do wonders. Also you can do crank pulley as well as intake & chip... forget about it. Even modded E39 M5s would have trouble.
