Simple!
I think this is the most rational statement I've read about this issue. AMG is Mercedes' performance division. AMG offers unique suspension components, rims, brakes, bodykits, etc, etc. It's not only about the engine when it comes to an AMG label.

Is it such a bad thing that a person with a non-AMG benz decides to upgrade to AMG rims, suspension or bodywork? Many AMG rims have the AMG label on them. Is that posing? In my opinion, it's just a cosmetic upgrade. If people want to upgrade to AMG suspension or brakes, that's just a performance (and cosmetic) upgrade. Is that posing?

So why do people get so upset about a AMG badge on the right side of the trunk? Maybe some people think it's a good cosmetic upgrade (whether they have any AMG parts or not).

It's ironic. Some AMG owners love to de-badge their cars, so people aren't as aware about the true nature of their car. Some owners of the low end/slowest Benz cars also deliberately de-badge their car so people aren't as aware about the true nature of their car too. This deliberate attempt at deception is not frowned upon at all. However, if somebody wants to slap a AMG badge on when it's not a "real AMG from the factory", then so many people get upset.

When I see a CLK430 "AMG", I don't really think the driver is saying his car performs as well as a CLK55 AMG. How is this posing?

The only time I think a person is posing is when they are deliberately trying to represent their car in an inaccurate way.....eg. if the car is a C230, but the car is labeled as a C55 AMG. That picture above of a SLK with the V12 badge is just plain stupid and deserving of criticism.

Its really simple. According to Mercedes;

No engine, no badge.

I don't go out of my way to troll someone with a badge that shouldn't but I'm not okay with it either. A CLK 430 is a great car as is. I very nearly bought one over a 55, but I wanted more power. So I paid more and I have no regrets. Just enjoy the 430 or 320 for what it is. A great Mercedes. If image was all you care about then you bought the car for the wrong reason.

In my opinion there is a big difference between hiding what you have and lying about what you have...

A CLK430 with an AMG badge on the trunk: the person is not lying, IMO
A CLK430 labelled as a CLK55 on the trunk: the person is lying, IMO

I guess the fundamental difference is that I have no problem with a non-AMG benz having a AMG label if the owner or dealer puts it on afterwards.....it's just like a non-AMG benz getting AMG rims.

Debadging is a privilege. Posing is not!

LIE - noun, verb, lied, ly·ing. –noun

1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.

2. something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture: His flashy car was a lie that deceived no one.

3. an inaccurate or false statement.

I believe putting an AMG badge on a car that was not made by AMG fits the definition of a lie

Let me help you - I've had the "No engine , no badge" in my signature for the last 4 years......it came from me and took off on this website as the simple solution to what this thread is all about.

So what do you call your cars when you take off parts from your AMG car and put aftermarket stuff on...in the purest sense it is no longer a AMG so you should take the AMG badge off as well so you are not 'lying'

Lol this is a funny thread.

.
Spotted a C55 at the gas station last week that had "Kompressor" badges on the fenders. I asked the owner if it has a Kleemann blower and his response was that it is an AMG. I asked again and he said, "it's a V8." I gave up. Not a true poser, but an undeducated owner.
