Forgive me as I know little about this car. I am confused I purchased this car certified from Mercedes dealership it has the badge on the trunk and all this stuff that says AMG on it exhaust, wheels, interior etc... was this done by the dealership? factory? or the previous owner? Can they be ordered this way? Is there anyway to tell by vin? If it comes from the factory with an AMG package, wheels, bumper, interior, is it not an AMG? Is the motor the only thing that this badge represents? I thought the numbers on the back represent the size of motor ex. CLS 500 or CLS55, CLS63..

yes you're correct the model designation on the trunk refers to the engine displacement.

however i could be wrong but i don't think the naturally aspirated 550 engines for your year are considered hand built amg engines. 2002 is the last year that AMG put out naturally aspirated 5.5 liter engines as far as i know

the solution to this problem is to remove the stock drivetrain and throw in an AMG drivetrain and you're set

edit:and after you do so, you'll have to type up an average of three pages worth of bickering to convince a single person at a time on this forum that you car is the same as the AMG

you'll probably even get some dude with a 10 second AMG trying to demonstrate logic such as thinking: anything that's not as fast as his 10 second car is simply not an AMG haha

Generally a true statement, however, Mercedes threw us all a curve when they switched late model 63 AMGs from the NA 6.3 motor to the 5.5 Bi Turbo. I believe there are a few examples of this in the past as well.

E555s are badged as E500s in Europe
W211 E550s were 5.5L Naturally Aspirated
W211 E63s were 6.2L Naturally Aspirated
W212 E550s are 4.6L Bi-Turbos
New W212 E63s are 5.5L Bi-Turbos

So badging is not always indicative of engine displacement.

F*ck the badging! That's not important unless you're not sure what engine you car has!

The AMG badge on the right side of your trunk is put on by Mercedes Benz factory if your car has an AMG engine installed from the factory only!

If MB themselves have not put in an AMG engine into your car, and slapped on an AMG vin number, then that AMG badge has no reason being there!

YOUR CAR WILL THEN BE CLASSIFIED AS A FAKE!

Your wife told me she wasn't married when she stayed at my place, does that classify her as being fake also?

The easiest way to tell if it's an actual AMG is to log into the amg private lounge..run by MB AMG....you must put enter your vin to join....wrong vin..can't join=not AMG.

Let me try to bring some clarity to the situation for you. Others, please jump in if I am misleading or inaccurate.

Regarding badging, it seems badging can come from almost anywhere today. In the case of your CLS, I suspect either the previous owner or possibly the dealership placed the AMG logo on the back. There has been much discussion on MBW about this in the past. It has been said that dealers are strictly forbidden from this activity, but some may do so anyway. I am quite certain the car did not come from the factory with the AMG trunk badge however.

Much confusion can arise from what I think is frequently referred to as the AMG sport package. For instance, I have an 06 ML500. It is not an AMG, but it does have the AMG sport package or appearance package. The SUV has AMG wheels and has the outward appearance of an AMG with the exception of the brake calipers and the exhaust tips. Under the hood is a standard MB 5 liter V8, non AMG engine. I suspect your CLS is similar to my ML in that respect although you have the 5.5 liter V8 making I think around 380 HP.

The heart of an AMG is the hand build high performance engine. All AMG engines have a placard with the signature of the AMG tech that hand built the engine. Knowing how **** the German's can be, I have no doubt they have an AMG code built into the nomenclature of the VIN, in fact, you might want to give this a try, https://mbworld.org/forums/vindecode...SK74FX3F041228 Also, all AMGs have only two numbers following the letter model vehicle designation. For example, a CLS55 and CLS63 are both AMGs.

Finally, it is not only the motor that makes a car an AMG. Other performance upgrades in the AMG includes improved braking easily identified by the massive calipers on the front brakes, the rest of the drive train, special AMG appointments and of course the appearance upgrades.

What's amazing is people asking for clarification instead of reading this thread. The same clarifications and answers have been repeated over and over and over again. And you don't even have to do a search.

well since it seems we're big on arguing semantics on this thread I guess I should add the handbuilt 5.5 AMG's from 99-02 did not get the badge with the signature. these engines are referred to as "AMG orphans" on this board

"since I built my AMG myself" King Travis you are a Tard,
Woo Hoo !!!
You installed a AMG motor into your shell and now call it a AMG. Keep talking you might get the rest of us to agree with your claim, Yah Right!
Give your VIN so CINDYCLK can refute your claim.

Now if you want a real AMG, you sir have to BUY IT.

Awaiting your blah blah blah!

glad to hear you're awaiting my blah blah blah

who needs to buy an AMG when you could build one?

besides the brakes my car is identical to the AMG. exterior, interior, engine, tranny, differential, everything.... obviously the vin doesn't reflect it being an AMG, it didn't leave the factory as an AMG. at no point in time did i ever deny this....it was later on converted to an AMG, using the exact same parts from the AMG model...

i understand it'd probably be hard to walk into the yacht club and explain my home made yacht is just as good as everybody there who had to pay the premium for their yacht(just so they could get into the yacht club and have a yacht in the first place). so really i have no issue with breaking it down into laymans terms for the "yacht" owners with their arrogant heads stuck really far into their asses to the point that they still think there is a significant difference between the cl500 and the cl55 amg

i must say i am very satisfied you did in fact refer to me as king travis, it seems my work here is done, i also changed your tagline to reflect the reality of the situation. something as simple as an AMG is very much able to be built outside of the mercedes headquarters.

my car is the same as the cl55 amg they put out for my year, there's really no logical evidence you could use to try to convince me otherwise because it simply does not make sense

go learn how to change your own oil and then come back to share your feelings of inadequacy

You see, it's hard for you to understand cause simply, you're not up there with the Elite ( the people MB targets ).

You may not value your time and efforts, but most people who own real AMG cars are people who value every minute of their precious time. I for example, charge $600 per hour for my professional services ( I'm a male jigalow )... so if you add up all the hours of my time spent on "building" a product that is already built by others, I have not only wasted my precious time on immitating others, but racked up enough man hours to cost me more than a straight out purchase and ownership of a premium product!

Which by the way, YOU DON'T OWN!!!
