Raced the new 2010 E today!
I raced the new coupe version of the 2010 E on my way home this afternoon.
QUICK car!
AND it was a DIESEL!!
From the lights he got the jump on me but I caught and passed him in 2nd gear. He then dropped back slowly until 100mph!
Next lights I let him go first. The gap he got of a cars length stayed constant until 100mph then I reeled him in .
WTF!
Am I losing my mind? My car started in Granny mode as I had been taking it easy over the last couple of days. But shouldn't I have ran him down easily?
I spoke with the driver at the next set of lights. He said it was a standard 3litre CDI. I told him mine was a tuned 2000 model 55 which he said I love that V8 sound. He said he had a load of torque and faster gear changes.
Still. I have 385hp and 425tq. I blow most other cars away, What happened?

Hi guys.
My car must be getting old!!
That's why I did the N/A 55 conversion and tuned the engine.
I don't know how much torque that diesel had or how light it was but through the first 3 gears it was quick.
I guess modern cars are that much superior .
I still think the 55 is a good engine but I'm sure he had some sort of upgrade. Ha ha!

That's what I thought.
My car's a cab so it maybe a little heavier. But even in Granny mode I still should have beat him more easily.
I looked at the specs on the new diesel and it's a 3l V6 Turbo, 231hp 540nm torque. Which makes me think he had a chip done. I know of companies that do diesel tuning boxes. Just goes to show how much you can get from a modern diesel.

You run LPG, right? If so, have you dyno'd the car since the conversion? Here in the states, LPG has 3/4 the energy of gasoline. Do you inject more, or have some way around the reduction in power versus gasoline? Or is LPG different in the UK?

Paul, I think all your issues are coming from the ECU, you really need to get it tuned right since you are running LPG it needs to be dialed in exactly. Are you running the AMG ECU at all or is it a totally different ECU?

Hey Marcus and AMS!
I need to get my LPG ECU (which is a piggy back system following the petrol injector timings) sorted. It can't cope with nearly 400hp so I'm getting one which can be custom tuned.
LPG in the UK is 108 octane but through research I've found that it burns slower than petrol so when the piston is coming down after combustion the LPG is still burning on half of it's down stroke losing power.
That day I switched over to petrol because the new E was right on my bumper and I knew he'd want to push it.
I'm running an AMG 55 ECU for the petrol timings. I do need to get a remap done after I had installed the AMS headers and Pulley (which work fine).
The problem I've had is the dyno operator can't/won't give me a graph to show where my gains are. He says I've made 40hp on the top end over where my cars power used to tail off. Torque is up 20 also.
My question is how can my car do all this yet make no overall peak hp from before. I think he messed up somewhere. I'm saving to get it done on another Dyno Dynamics dyno and spend a few hours tuning it right.
Do you guys think that even in Granny mode I should have walked it too!
385hp and 422 lbs/ft is still alot to play with Vs 231hp and 540nm torque (I don't know the conversion rate for lbs/ft).
Has anyone else had a close call that they should have walked?

Yes we have speed cameras to look out for, but they're not on all major roads.
In the UK it seems that most speeding duties have been taken over by fixed cameras so you're safe if you know where they are and if you don't they're painted in a florescent yellow so you can see them.

540nm = roughly 450 TQ so its alot of torque, and the newer diesels are geared much better so you can actually get decent acceleration out of them. Something else must be wrong, your ECU tune is just way off and if thats the case the ECU can easily pulley 20-30HP by retarding timing if necessary. Once you get a true proper custom tune... it should sort everything out. DEFINITELY get the ECU custom tuned on the dyno dynamics dyno, it will give you much better results.

I knew there had to be something else.

Hey Carl!
Special thanks to you Buddy!
Your input helped get the car moving. Also by changing my MAF as you said, I picked up 8hp.
As you can see I'm still working on some issues trying to get the hp you have.

You'll get there bro and your car is a beauty! And by now u should have perhaps picked up more than 8 hp since the car needs time to adjust the parameters more since you put in the new MAF.

the 350/320cdi v6 with 7g-tronic is quick trough 40-100mph, its where this engine shine, I know because I have one in my w209
Not so much out of the line acceleration but mid speed to 125mph its very quick, but not as quick as audi 3.0TDI or bmw 30d or 35d rocket, this one gives porsche 911 drivers headaches
I will chip tune mine soon, and then I can make a run with you
My cousin with his 645ci don't have enough power to get away from me till 125mph, and mine is still stock

I know those cars are quick!
After you've chipped yours do a post and let us know what power she makes.
If I come across another diesel I'll be ready!
