CLK55 AMG prices soo low?

Hi guys! I've driven 911 porsches my whole life and recently took my friends 2002 clk55 for a week. Holy cow!! I was quite impressed with the torque! I just sold my 94 widebody and now looking into purchasing one myself. The thing I'm shocked about is the price for these tire eaters. Average cost for a 00-02 clk55 is $12-15K. Why are they sooo low? I would actually pay more for these.

Is it costly to maintain? I do all the work (valves, oil, suspension, seals, fuel pump, plugs, etc) myself on all my vehicles. Is this easy to do on a clk55?

Are parts costly?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My 01 CLK55 has been a joy. I got it for 12k about a year ago. The maintenance isn't terrible. It's no different than any performance minded car. Fix things before they break, and you avoid costly repairs. Just be sure to give it a very close inspection prior to purchase.

I haven't listed it yet. The car isn't perfect. The front bumper is cracked, and the hood has some rock chips. Should I ask for more even with these flaws?

congrats - I think probably a near-term bottom here. I remember when 00-02 E55's were in the low teens...but since bounced a bit to mid-teens for clean ones. For 02 cabs, the clean ones in norcal are asking $15-18k...I guess that's why I went for 2006 since it was only a little bit more for 18" wheels and more options.

I think its an AMG thing. They tend to plummet in value.

As an ex P-car owner, I can tell you the maintenance on a CLK is less than a quarter of that on a 911. No distributor belt for the second set of plugs & no valve adjustments.

2001 CLK 55 AMG.......... 2001 Corvette Z06.........
im not sure either but i like it. i got mine for $7800. only issues i inherited were:

1. engine mounts - definately check those when u get a one

2. faulty seat switch- cleaned with electrical cleaner.

3. faulty +/- switch on the climate control. most of the time the piece that broke off is in there. i used 3 layers of 2 part epoxy to repair and re-enforce it. never break again.

4. water pump

5. leak on rear main seal.

6. some of the clips were broken that held the drivers side rocker on. easy fix.

1,3,and 5 will be encountered alot.

The car is extremely well built and have had no problems out of it. it should last quite some time even the way i drive it. drove it back from tx to va on bad wp with no issues other than adding some water along the way to compensate for the leaky pump.

i just like the car it is one of a kind and made in limited quantity so unless u live in an extremely rich area expect to receive compliments and to make your friends jealous that paid 20k for a mustang that can be seen anywhere.

Paid approx £5000 for mine a year ago (Ish $7000) No Xenons No Comand needed rotors and plug change and some paint/bodywork - so I guess that added something like another £2000?? ($3000 - I've not really totalled it up)

So for $10000/£7000 I've got a perfect and brilliant (but fairly stock at present) car without a few options! A basic 996 with 90k++ would cost £14k ($22k) and there are hundred of them around!!!!!!

Not too many CLK55's around in the UK I've seen??

No xenons?

That's interesting. U.S.-spec W208/55s received virtually every W208 option as standard. Xenon, rear sunshade, sunroof (even the ski sack!)....the only options were phone, linguatronic, COMAND, and CD changer. Designo was an appearance option too.

I like your tag as well.

As far as the wrap....cosmetic modding is a highly personal taste. For me, just wrapping the roof would make me think something was unfinished....slammed, then black wheels, dark tint (you get the idea).

Question is...where does it stop?

Correct me if I'm wrong, Chappy, but (power side) folding mirrors were neither standard nor offered as an option in the USA. So that's one for Old World. Another one that got away was the fire extinsguisher mounted under the driver's seat. Not to mention TV. What about auto dimming mirrors? Did you guys get that?

Even if not always fully indulged, Yanks are spoiled by MB in terms of the prices they pay for their AMGs and what comes standard. So, naturally, like spoilt (note UK spelling) children, they quickly get bored ... and toss the toy aside. Thus resale prices plummet faster than the fuel gauge on full throttle.

Yes, I acknowledge very spoiled(note US spelling)...and AMGs are not the only things that are tossed aside - lots of other things as well. Madison Avenue and American consumerism dictates that culturally is better. Heck, even Bruce Anderson of Excellence Porsche magazine bought into this and says to buy the latest/greatest Porsche you can buy.
Fore me, perhaps it true with some things, but new is not always better. Look at the quality homes in Europe that last 300 years, yet a new US home can look like crap in 5 yrs? Same can be said for 30 yr old MBs that are well taken care of vs. the 3 yr old Chevys.

Bottom line, it's good for buyers
For the price that I paid for my 2006 CLK55 cab, I can't imagine a better open-air sports/sporty/luxury car that can comfortably seat 4 people.
Patrick
