Help a NOOB buy an AMG

I am looking at a 2007 CLK AMG 63 Convertible. It has 12,000 miles on it. When I test drove it last week, there was a whistling noise coming out of it. Being that the dealer selling it was Audi, we drove 15 miles to the sister Mercedes store. They diagnosed it as a bad intake (leaky intake). Replacement came in today and the car will be ready tomorrow. This is a $45k deal. No warranty. Am I crazy for trying to buy this? It has low miles, super clean. The owner traded it on a Audi A7.

Any help would be great. I am a car enthusiast. I have a 2008 Z06 Corvette. The AMG will be primarily for the wife. I do have a great local Mercedes mechanic.

Given the high cost of service and maintenance, I would not personally purchase any AMG out of warranty.

Get yourself a warranty, and you should be good to go. You really don't want to own an AMG without a warranty.
As you would find out the first time, or your wallet would find out the first time you took the car in for a non-warranteed issue.

Yes, I know everyone says to get the warranty. Issue is that this car will be driven max of 2-3k miles a year. It's for the wife really. I was thinking about keeping it as a classic Mercedes (according to some research, only 134 CLK AMG 63s were imported to the USA in 2007) for a long time. Maybe even 20+ years.

As long as you know what you're getting yourself into. Although this car is rare, I'm not sure that it will become a classic...but if you have the pockets to cover the expense and depreciation that comes with AMGs then by all means, go for it!

The issue with an AMG really isn't the drive train, as it's pretty bullet proof. It's all the electronics, that could break on you. If your confident in your mechanics ability, and you don't think that maintenance will be a henderence, then go for it. I have an E63 with an airmatic suspension, it's the only potential issue with this car. As it would be very expensive to replace, that's why a warranty is needed.

I've driven and owned a lot of AMG's (see my list) and currently own a 2007 CLK63 AMG cabriolet like you describe. My car has 23K on the speedo and I use it for a daily driver. FYI I also had the same intake problem that was fixed under warranty. To-date its been a great reliable car and I wouldn't hesitate to own it out of warranty. BTW, there were 143 cars imported to the USA in 2007 and 100 in 2008 and although it may never be collectible (IMO) it will always be unique and worth owning so go for it, you'll love it!

AMG MBZ are expensive to fix. Funny they have a sister MBZ store and they didn't take the car there, have it CPO and be able to sell the factory extended warranty. Some of the aftermarket warranties are good but they are basically an insurance policy. Otherwise sounds like a very nice car at a very good price.

S 560, C 63 S Cabriolet
I recently purchased a CLK63 Cabriolet with 27k miles on it. Even though it is not my daily driver, I can't seem to stay out of it. It's such a blast to drive. I got mine as a CPO and definitely would not own it without a warranty. With only 12k miles, you should be able to get a great price on an exclusionary extended warranty through either Fidelity or NAC. Last October, I bought a 6yr/60k miles ($100 ded.) Fidelity Platinum Warranty on my CLS63 with around 12k miles for about $2300. Hope this helps and good luck on the purchase.
