I'm happy with my custom setup but I'd LOVE to see pictures of a OEM 2005 CLK55 exhaust system. I've been told that it is dual, then merges to a single setup to pass the axle then again goes dual... yes, no?

Sorry don't have any pics from the front section of mine.
But EPC says it comes together after the secondary cats and splits again at the Y above ^^

I would point out that the layout shown in the above photo (two into one then the Y into the two tailpipes) is the Coupe only. On the Cabriolet, it does not split into the Y behind the axle-it just goes in a single pipe to the left into a single muffler and out the back. (Thus, the Coupe has four oval tips out the back, two on the left and two on the right, and the Cabriolet only has two, both coming out the left side.) Accordingly, in order to make room for the dual mufflers, the Cabrio has the small fixed spare tire, and the Coupe has the collapsible spare.

(But--I have no idea WHY?? It's difficult to figure out what factors MB figured required the major design difference. Perhaps the dual-dual exhausts would have been too loud for the Cabrio?? Does anybody have any information? )

I've read (somewhere?) before that the cabrio requires extra frame stiffening across the bottom to not flex under the lack of solid roof. That meant the dual exhaust paths couldn't "fit".

Don't know if that's the truth, but it seems reasonable.
