Both are fine cars. If the CLK55 does not meet your needs or preferences then change. Keep in mind you will take a significant hit in the process financially. The used car market is in the toilet currently. Expect in the neighborhood of $52,000 to trade your vehicle or mid $50's at best if you can sell it. I just picked up a 2001 CLK55 with 7000 miles for low $50's and I had more than one choice. The guy I bought it from paid close to $80,000 7 months ago when you account for tax and luxury tax.

i'm toying with the same idea, except i am coming from an E55. i test drove the M5 this past weekend and i was impressed with the engine and gear box, sweet sound and very intuitive for me. the handling was pretty good but definitely needs some aftermarket treatment. my main complaint would be with the interior. inside it is much more cramped than the E and the feel of the plastics and leather aren't as upscale. also, the car was used with 15,000 miles, model year 2000, with the sport interior. the aluminum trim was flaking in several spots and looks to be prone to scratching. that's pretty bad for just 15,000 miles. and it seems to afflict many of the used m5's i've looked at. i would have to get the M5 new with the exclusive interior with wood trim.

but when it comes down to it, the m5 appeals to me because of it's engine tranny combo. the E is my first auto box ever, and while the 5.5 engine mated to the amg transmission is like butter and incredibly intuitive, i want the feel of a manual. and the M5 enging is so f'ing sweet! the last production month for the M5 is this coming february i hear. so i'm planning to put an order in sometime Q3/Q4.

thanks for the insight ill keep it in mind. Did you have a good E experience because i was playing with that idea also. i was just wondering what you think about that.

with regards to the E, i have had a very positive experience. i'm sure you are very familiar with the engine tranny combo so i won't go into that but as far as build quality and comfort, i think it is unsurpassed in it's category. i lowered my car on koni's and H&R's so i am quite happy with the handling, the stock set up was way too soft for me. the M5 is much sportier than the E, but i don't think it is as luxurious (i don't know if you consider either car luxurious). if you want something more athletic, 4 doors, manual, it's hard to find something other than the m5 this side of the pacific. of course, you might wait for the jag s-type R to come out, but even now we can be sure that its residuals won't be nearly as sound as the merc's or beemers.

I justed purchased CLk55 and looked very closely at the M5. My only problem was they do not have the SMG trannie avail like in the M3. In so cal traffic it's not a fun everyday driver. When the next model year 04 they should have the new trans, it will be a great car. I contacted BMW and they are still unsure of the 04 model year

Both the M5 and CLK55 AMG are wonderful cars. The M5 Luxury interior is superior to the E55's interior. The M5 with the Sport interior is not as nice as the E55's.

I love the CLK55 AMG Cabrio for South Florida top down driving, What with traffic and such............ But there is nothing like an M5 six speed tranny for the all out fun factor.

Question is, Do you want to shift the gears yourself ?

Both cars are a blast to drive. Most of the time I have a hard time choosing which one to drive !

If you can wait about a year, you might want to consider the Audi RS6. I am biased since I have a deposit on one of the 800 cars coming to the US in 2003, but this one should be a blast: a 450 hp twin turbo 4.2L V-8, all wheel drive, 19 inch wheels, Recaro seating and a trick suspension.
At $75k, should be price competitive with both the M5 and the E55. But if you live with inclement winter weather as I do, Quattro might make a difference. I'll be keeping the CLK 55 cab as my summer car. Check out audiworld.com for more details on the RS6 sedan.
