Recently picked up a clk55 which has been stood for a couple of years. Noticed at the front of the engine a motor type fan unit is missing. Can someone tell me what this is and what it's for?

Thanks

Radiator fan? Used for cooling the engine coolant temperature to maintain an optimum engine temperature set by OEM.

you are talking about the emission fan, its a black plastic housing fan that sits infront of the intake manifold between the two gold top valves. its there to warm up the primary cats at startup. when these motors are supercharged with kleeman, HPS or stock AMG supercharges they remove and relocate that fan somewhere else to allow room for supercharger belt, they also cut the bracket portion that's on block.

To add it only starts up on start of day, I have never noticed it running otherwise.

If it is missing leave it missing. No harm done.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, know why it's been stood so long... Got a nasty misfire when revving and coughs splutters when revving with no power at all. Checked on star and it comes under hht. Right bank o2 sensor showing lean, I'm suspecting cats blocked as I've changed the fuel and filter and because it does it from cold start up when running open loop so 02 sensors not in use.

Actually idles rock solid with no misfire only when revving and misfire counts are all on right hand side bank which is running lean. O2 sensor on left bank tracking perfectly.

Any thoughts?

Can be MAF, ignition wires, cracked plug or a loose fitting MAF,

Lean can be a faulty O2 sensor or a vacuum leak.
