265/35/17

Went on the michelin (pilot sport) site and saw that they make a 265/35/17. Too bad that it can't fit our 8.5's. Overall diameter 24.3, alittle quicker gearing anyone? We missed it by a half an inch. Any nice 17x9/9.5 wheels out there, because I don't feel like searching the net for hours trying to find some. Otherwise, I'll just go the 18" route and be done.

I hope you didn't think that it was a misprint. 17" not 18"

Don't be sorry Tery, no biggie. I just wanted to get some kind of feedback, as to why nobody on this site has ever tried, nor talked about this tire. My car is an '01 with 15,000 miles, so in my case I do very little highway driving. I realize that there are a number of pros/cons, by going this route. The 265/35/17's would wearout faster (more revs per mile), show more miles on my car (then in reality), and gas mileage would decrease. The grey area- having to spend the money, on the lowering the car would be manditory (there is already a large enough gap there), but handling would improve. Upfront, a set of 235/40/17 could match the rears. Pilotsport is the only company from what I've seen, that make the 265/35/17. If in the future they axe that size, come replacement time, I'd be a fish out of water. Now for the good- quicker, more responsive and better handling. I'm a bit fuzzy about the traction part. Does a wider section width =better traction? I mean is that the main spec. one looks at? I'm guessing that's why some opt for the 265/35/18 instead of the 255 accepting the trade-off of a taller tire. The 17" 265 has a .2 (times 2 tires=.4) greater sect. width than that of the 18" 265. I reserve the right to be a tire fool, for I'm a virigin at this sort of thing. I'm just looking for some info and not to get ripped on , thanks.

I would post this in the tire info forum. I tried looking at

tirerack.com, but they don't list any tires in this size. I know that for a 265/35-18, the minimum recommended width is a 9" wheel, and I would assume that the same holds true in the 17" tire, as the determinor of wheel width is the tread width, which is the same.

So, you might have to get wider wheels or settle for a 255. The 265's will offer better handling and more off-the-line traction, at the price of more road noise and a slightly stiffer ride, & 235's up front will also help handling, again at the price of a bit stiffer ride/more noise.

I switched to 18" W210 E55 rims on the rear and left the 17's on the front, with 265/35-18 and have been very happy. Gave the car a much-needed boost in the traction department.

i thought 265/35 will fit a 18x8.5, jsut that the tires will be a bit wider than the rim. But isn't it this good ? it will protect your rim from curb rush. I think same thing applys to the 17x8.5 rim.

I'm going by tirerack's recommendations:

Here's their specifications page for the Michelin Pilot Sport. For the 265/35-18, they specify a recommended rim width of 9.5", with a rim range of 9" to 10.5". So, I think an 8.5" rim is too small for that size of tire.

I'd give them a call and double-check, but I think that for this size, you'll have to get wider rims.

True tirerack doesn't list a 265/35/17, I saw it on the michelin(usa) site. The only net dealer I've seen selling them, was on 1010tires.com. Unfortunately, the price for tires there, is nothing to brag about (around $330.00). I'd think that tirerack, or perhaps if need be, your local dealer could order them. Tery, I wish that we could fit these tires, on our 8.5" rears. This tire/wheel stuff, is truely a game of mm's, in this case about 12.7. I'll just have to buy, a new set of wider wheels, while spooning on winter tires, with the monoblocks. I've been eyeing those dunlop m3's, when the leaves start to fall again.
