There is no W211 CLK55
The W211 is the E55
2003-plus W209 CLK55
2000-2002 W208 CLK55

MB never made a MY 2000 (W208) CLK55
.....sorry, couldn't resist

Back to the topic, a BMW M3 (with SMG) is damn quick on the drag strip....the manual stick is just as fast, but is the owner willing to burn out his clutch to get a .1 or .2 second faster time? With the AMG, you just feather the gas pedal, the V8 does the rest!

On the highway, from a roll, the torque of the AMG V8 to very tough to beat.
The M3 has the edge on the track.

Times will boil down to traction and reaction times....they're that close.

I was not counting the F1 Pace Car or the cars sold outside of the United States, but then again, I suppose I could have been more clear

Thanks for pointed that out.
Yes..some BMW fans still think they were the only racers, those were the good old days.
Friend of mine an M3 owner almost thought that he could 'beat' the E55W211, and how? :p

But it's a common thought amongst many BMW owners that their cars are faster than anything else. Just because they do not know anything about Merc.. sadly. They don't even bother reading about them because they think it's an old mans car and it can't be fast anyway.

Thats a very nice and interesting topic.
I think if M3 E46 Vs CLK55 W209 for the 1/4mile drag, the result would be equal give or take 0.2s . The question is if they raced for 1 mile which one would get there first?
The difference in torque between M3 and CLK55 just shows how the CLK is much more drivable and relaxing. Meaning for everyday use the CLK55 is much more faster than M3, 500+Nm speaks for itself.
Handling well in my opinion BMWs are the ultimate driver's machine. BUT it must be acompanied by the ULTIMATE DRIVER. Meaning, BMWs are one of the best brands in the world no-one can say other wise. Their cars are built with great deal of track sence. So on the track you may not find a better company than a BMW. Now, where do you spend more time on the track or off the track?
Merc will give you a great handling car for OFF the track use. The merc is designed MORE in favour of the average drivers skills. If you are an average driver and got in a tight situation on a BMW you have a good chance of loosing control. But thats not the case in Mercs.

And not to start a huge controversy (not ******* on MB) but in the late 80s early 90s what MB is comparable to the e30 M3?
