auto trans

Do any of you guys think the automatic takes away from the "driving experience"?

In a word, no. I have alot of manual trans cars (5 at current count), and I find the current transmission completely satisfactory. I also have a dsg 07 Audi tt for my son, and while that box is nice, it is really no nicer. The extra gears of the BS make it superior to the tip in my wife's Boxster. The car offers plenty of challenge to keep you totally focused. AS

I think you hit the nail on the head as the ability to keep "totally focused" helps my track concentration as it's one less thing I have to worry about.
I'm over the "manual transmission" mantra of better control. One of the most frustrating things for novice track drivers is what gear they should be in rather than where is the car on the track. Also the high torque of the CLK63 overcomes the necessity of being in the perfect gear that plagues the porsche tiptronic.

I dont' feel it takes away from the driving experience at all, around town...During very spirited drives and on the track, you have to anticipate the downshifts as the corner approaches as it takes a bit longer for the torque converter to do its job. When the 7 Gtronic PLUS comes out in the C63, we will be able to copy the software and load it into our Black Series so it will rev match. That's going to be the icing on the cake AFAIC. Other than that, the car is pretty much perfect. Especially in traffic.

One thing that I think many don't realize is that few race cars today use 6 speed boxes where you use all 6 speeds rowing a lever. Alot of the front engined V8 cars use a Jericho box, where there is no need for the clutch, so that part of "involvement" is gone. All of those cars are driven with left foot braking, which our cars also encourage. So all that is missing is rowing the lever.
The seven speeds of our cars woudl be a bit much to think about as a manual box.
If you have been to an F1 race, you will notice that the downshifting (paddles of course) is just the driver pulling back the lever as fast as he can while braking. There really is no art of "shifting".
This track season ended for me before I got thru the break-in period, so I haven't yet tracked the BS. But, when I have tracked Porsches with a tip, I found it worked best just leaving it in D. I never missed the downshift rev-matching, as it only downshifts under heavy braking. In the tip, the torque converter plus the braking mutes the downshift jolt to the point wher you can't feel it, and it doesn't unsettle the car.
That's a long answer for a short question. The funny thing to me is that this car, more than most others, must be experienced to be understood. The last car that I felt this way about was a Can Am Lola- it was really hard to explain the experience. AS

Do you know that for a fact- that we will be able to replicate the rev matching simply through a software update. That is great if true and the dealers are willing to do it.

This question was specifically asked on the last AMG Private Lounge chat.
Unfortunately the answer was no, you will not be able to retrofit the software.

The discussion can be found here if you are a Private Lounge member.

Regardless, the head tech at my dealer said they would do it for me. Now, if it's not technically possible there may be a problem...I assume that is what is being discussed in the link you provided - most likely the software is VIN specific. I have someone who can copy it and create aftermarket software that is flash loaded if that is the case. My only concern is that you may have to completely erase the BS tranny software, and that would not be good as the upshift program is really nice, firm and quick. It will be a matter of taking the software code for the downshift blip and integrating it into the existing BS software. Once my guys figure out how to do that, I think it will be well received by anyone with a 63 AMG.

I'd want to make sure the CLK63 Black's transmission and the new Speed Shift C63 are in reality... the same transmission... before feeding it C63 software. It might upchuck and make one expensive down shift burp... not covered by a warranty.

My car already seems to somehow know... when I'm going to brake... and the F1 pace-car down shifts are nicely right on que...
