First surprise from my first Mercedes

I picked up the Black from its first service this morning and was surprised to find I had to pay for it. I have had BMWs, Audis and Range Rovers and have n't had to pay for servicing ... are others going to follow MB or is this possibly a bad move for MB?

BTW; $144 for the service

Andy

How many miles at your first service? 1000-3000 service is usually free and that's were they change the rear axel oil.

Not suprising dealers have no clue whats up with this car. The first service is not really a service at all, due at 1000 miles....it's simply a visual inspection to make sure everything is ok, fluids, no leaks, nothing coming loose. If they charged you for this then you should file a compliant. My dealer, during this 1000 mile inspection, did not charge me but erroneously stated that the rear dif oil did not need to be changed...I did it myself.

Service A on the AMG's is at 10,000mi

I brought mine in at 1000mi&had them change the oil&filter even though it was probably unnecessary in most peoples minds

If you are refering to the 1500 or 1800 mile service or whatever it's called it should have been complimentary. Mine was free anyways. I would go back and demand your money back. I believe the do an oil change, dif fluid change and diagnostics check.

The Black Series is different, I don't have my paperwork handy, but a mandatory service is required somewhere between 1500-2000 miles.

From the looks of it the dealerships are all over the place on this topic. I was told by my dealership upon delivery to bring the car in at 1500 for a mandatory complimentary service. I actually had the guys at Evosport take it to an MB dealer near them before they started working on my car. It was free and it did include fluid changes. I know this because one of the fluids had to be sent in from out of the country as well as a single use bolt or something. I appologize for my vagueness on this one, it was handle by Evosport. Anyhow the service was free, I verified that with Evosport after they picked it up.

First "Get Acquainted" service is sugested any time between 1000 - 3000 miles should be free but it's just a check up, they don't DO anything unless it's needed. This is suggested as a good time to ask the SA any questions you may have about the car. It's really just a PR thing.

The first real service (A Service) is at 1 yr or 13,000 (10,000 AMG) miles and it costs a bit more than $144.

Your first tire rotation should also be free up to 6,500 mi.

As far as I know

All first services "Get Acquainted" are free from MB.
A
B
C
and so on you will pay and like it.

They used to do free service programs during your warranty period, and went to pay service
in 05 model years as all the dealers crying over the lost income.I guess they didnt make enough selling cars.

...........From 2005 onwards Mercedes dropped its free service. You now have to pay maintenance service that was free prior to 2005. Pretty much all other luxury car makers offer free maintenance service. Welcome to Mercedes! Mercedes builds very nice cars, service however is not one of their strong points. Make sure you do not take your car to a different dealer from the one you purchased the car frome. If you do, not only will you pay for the service, you will also pay out of pocket for alternate transportation......yep, except if you ride the bus.

Im not so sure thats true anymore (that pretty much all other car luxury car makers offer free service). I think BMW and SAAB are pretty much the only ones that continue to offer free service.

Do you honestly think your tires are going to last much more than 6500 miles? LOL! I think it should state first tire replacement at 6500 miles, I wish that was free!

I hoped someone would get it, You have to dismount the tires and flip em side to side as they're unidirectional to rotate them. If the last 5000 miles your not driving the car.

Thanks for you comments folks ... from the above I can see that I was not unfairly treated, neither did they do me any favors but that's probably because I didn't buy the car from the place I received the service. Answers to above are:

My car has done 1700 miles, so this was the inspection, plus rear diff oil change. They also fixed a disconnected hose to the driver's side heating vent.
Very friendly folks, great facility with over 50 service bays, huge customer lounge with virtual reality golf ... I did get a loaner car free of charge.

HUH ?? The tires are not side specific ??? Plus, rotating tires means swapping front to rear, rear to front...or at least that's how I've always understood it.

They are specific, no way to rotate these tires, 4 different part numbers (FL, FR, RL, RR) unless you want to run 285's in the front and 265's in the rear.

Yes, you are correct they are side specific as they are unidirectional. My comment was tongue in cheek as the only way to rotate would be to dismount and swipe side to side which can be done although the tire nanny's don't recommend it. I've done this on my Porsche to get a little more track life out of the tires where there's camber wear.
