Anyone see a problem here?

This rotor is indicative of both fronts, at 14k miles. About 850 track miles.
Would you be worried about tracking this rotor?

I'm not, but a guy who claims to be knowledgeable got all wound up about them. So a second opinion or two won't hurt!

I'd be happy to hear your thoughts and expert opinions and remember this pic is probably magnified 3x.

Change them for some CC rotors...looks like these don;t stand up to the track-generated heat too well.

I heard this happens because the rotors are drilled after casting, rather than having the holes casted into the rotors!

These holes are in fact, cast.

Are you using stock brake pads? I am not an expert but it looks like your rotors have gone thru some extreme temperature variations. Are you sure you did not torching your rotors and threw bucket of ice water on them! J/k

From the pic, those cracks appear to be surface. I would change them now and forget about the issue. But since you are OK with them then I would change them once any crack lines from any of the slotted holes start to connect to each other.

Your about at the limit of the rotor, if the spiders touch each hole replace.
Actually they don't look to bad 14k and 800+ track miles, that's double what I get on my porsche. The question I ask myself, when I'm considering something as important as brakes, what's my life worth and how much are rotors?
There was a famous race driver Rolf Stommlen who was killed at Riverside driving a 935 Porsche. The theory was that the owner didn't replace the rear rotors and it exploded on the back straight destroying the rear wing which caused him to loose the rear wing and crash. I remember that event as I was there.

Okay, Jim pushed me over the top.

Discretion is the better part of valor.
I'll let the dealer have a look before the next track day.

Since the calipers have turned gold, I'm not sure they'll warranty them.

Thanks to all and I'm still open to a metallurgy expert commenting.

Your kidding me right?

You guys must not have ever tracked a car. No warranty or tires or brakes after they have seen track duty.

How do they know the car has been tracked? I don't see it being an issue black series customers get extra babied anyways and the dealer gets paid to do the repairs so I do not see why they would care if it has been tracked or not. I don't really know the length of the warranty though this could be an issue.

There's a hint in the picture below and it has nothing to do with gold paint.

14k and 850+ track miles...consider yourself blessed, I toasted a set of rotors with about 3k street miles in 45-48 laps at Road America last spring. Drop the coin on a new set, catastrophic failure of those rotors at speed is gonna cost you a lot more $ than just new pads & rotors.

Jon, rotor cracks come from the extreme heat cycling of the rotor. This would be REALLY rare on a normal street car even one that is driven quite hard.

But hey, if you have a delaer that will replace them under warranty, then by all means

Just as an FYI, MB's warranty on brakes is 12 months, 12000 miles, whichever comes first.

And I agree with Jim, I would replace them if it were my car. Anyone's life is worth more than a brake job.

When I need new rotors they're going to get frozen by Dr. Freeze before being put on the car.

Update? Did the dealer replace under warranty? If no, what did you replace with and at what cost?
