Thanks.

Does "avg" and "above" pertain to the condition of the car?

No, "avg" and "above" are based on the sale prices.

EG: you will never see an "avg" sale price exceeding an "above" price on MMR. Nor will you ever see a "below" exceed an "avg" sale price.

While condition is clearly a factor in determining the price, I have seen some "below" cars that are better than some "avg" cars... it just depends on who is buying on that given day and what they are willing to pay.

Isn't the take home lesson "Drive your car"?
The owner who drove 3000 miles lost $60,000 or 20 bucks a mile.
The owner who drove nearly 30,000 miles lost about $75,000, or $2.50 per mile.
This car does not make you happy when it sits in the garage.
(Mine has 23,000 miles now, and I'm hoping to have 150,000 before I sell it). AS

My 92 500E has 173,480 on it. I have loved it every mile. It cost way more than the Black. The Black is the new DD.

You rock AS, I only have 15k on mine.
I don't care when I sell it, it's given me a tremendous amount of driving pleasure. Worth every depreciative penny! (I may have made up a word there, but you know what I mean.)

Congratulations to all of you who picked up a BS at a great price. I hope you drive the BS every day and to every place (yes, I let the valet park it, but they usually put it in front).
My most-similar experience was picking up a new 1994 BMW 850CSI (the equivalent of an M8, but not called that) for $84,000 (in 1994, the sticker price was $103,000, and mine was the last available).
I drove it 165,000 miles thru August of 2008, all seasons (on 4 Blizzaks), all weather, learned to drift it, and repaired a few chin spoiler/front valance body parts.
Guys who didn't drive the cars were trying to get $50,000, for cars with 30,000+/- miles, and those cars stayed listed for months.
When I bought my BS, I sold the 850CSI for $29,000 within 6 hours of the ad on Autotrader. My ownership cost was 33 cents a mile. The guys who bought at intro paid full price, and for the low miles owners, wound up with costs like $2.00 per mile.
I think the best thing you can do is drive every bit of utility out of the car, and sell it for what it's worth later.
By the way, the guy who bought the 850 loves it, has restored/polished/maintained it beautifully. I saw it at the Redman Historics (Road America) in the concours show when I was competing in the vintage event. Looked like a 3,000 mile car. AS

interesting take, but no.

below/avg/above is strictly condition.... which is somewhat a function of mileage, but not always.

condition is slightly subjective, so you will see every now and then an avg to be worse off than a below, but overall the condition appraisals are done consistently as wrong evals are grounds for arbitration and auction houses try to avoid those at any cost.
