Black Series Intake / Air Inlet

I was poking around under my hood and noticed that the air inlets for the intake are blocked by a small piece of plastic that prevents air from going straight into the intake tubes. I presume this is to prevent rain and other debris from making it's way up the intake path into the filters. It would seem to me that if these small pieces were removed it would create more of a ram air effect allowing better airflow into the motor. What do you guys think? Or, would additional/more forceful airflow be negated by the fact that our throttles never open all the way ? I look forward to your thoughts.

I'm sure it design to prevent water enter when rain. Here's 2 pics of my cars. The CL 55 air inlet is also cover but the CLK 500 air inlet is completely open.

Thanks for the pix...yeah that IS odd
I just don't know...I would think that moisture is the only reason for it as the filter would take care of any debris. Also, any water that might enter would be evaporated by the heat in the intake tubes...then the condensation might pose an issue/problem. But the fact that your CLK 500 is wide open leads me to believe that I'm just overthinking it and being overly cautious...

I removed the obstructions only to find that sand finds it way into the filter system much easier. I abanonded further home modificaitons

Jimmy - so did you have to buy new pieces and install them after you cut the other pieces up?

e

Mine are removed as well as some internal mods done by evesport, I have not had any issues with the intake tube the more free floningwing openings, at least nothing an air filter can't stop. Have any of you guys taken a good look at the intake openings onan SLS? You can put your fist into the openings and its a straight shot into filters and MAF, they don't seem too concerned about debris with that set up right out of the factory.

Luke...you catch a case of the modding bug lately?

Evosport did some internal mods to the air box, hard to say how much improvment but with these motors a little here and a little there seems to add up. Still, it seems that the big improvement comes with long tube headers and exhaust. That's difficult in Calif. as that's a fail on the smog test.

Not to jump in, but very similar plastic shields came in my GL (snap-in versus molded piece). I removed them without problem and have since put around 3k miles on without any noticeable issues.

This actually reminds me that my C63 stalled a couple times in a high pressure wash. The only mods I had on that car were a tune & a charcoal delete (I didn't modify the intake at all).

No, they just want a proper handwash
Just be happy, to get even, they don't punch you in the face with the airbag.

+2. What did Evosport do? I've heard (hearsay) before that they drilled holes to the bottom of each intake box.
