Suspension issue!!!!

I am not sure if this is the first thread on this, but my car seems to have some kind of suspension/coilover and spring issue. I will try to explain it as well as I can. I would appreciate any comments or suggestion. Has this happened to anybody else.

When the car is cold and i drive it out of my driveway, with the wheels turned all the way, it feels as if the coils bunch up and then suddenly release as I roll through. Another instance is, once again a cold start and I attempt to do a hard U turn, the same thing happens. The suspension bunches up (at least that is how it feels) and releases in increments.

I hope that someone knows something about this or if there has been another thread, which i missed or couldnt find.

All your opinions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Eitan

With the steering turned completely, isn't one wheel dragging? Mine does, even my SL55 does.

No wheels dragging. Even on a flat road it does this when the car is cold. I am not talking about going up or down the driveway where the inside wheels lifts off the ground.

This has happened to me a few times, also in the very cold winter and when turning very slowly with the steering all the way turned. So far no other issues while driving. I kept telling myself it's just the coilovers....

I had some really strange creaking issues with mine a couple months ago. The dealer said there is a steel plate about 3mm thick that protects the oil pan and suspension subframe. It bolts to the subframe and also provides some added rigidity to the area that the steering rack attaches to.
On my car the mounting bolts had backed out (hand tight - spec is 12 nm). Perhaps this is also happening to your car. I'd take it to the dealer and have them take a look. My guy at Simonson is great and takes very good care of my car. Shoot me a PM is you want his contact info.

Thanks Luke for the response. I am pretty sure that what you are describing isnt the issue with my car. Certainly this is a suspension issue as it only happens when the car is cold and only while i am making a turn and goes away once the car has been driven for 15 minutes or so.

Is your guys name @ simonson Kurt? If not, that is who i work with there.

I had a similar problem years ago with one of my 996's, except it was when the outside temperatures were high. The front springs got stuck on the rubber spring pads and when I turned the wheel, it coiled the spring before it broke loose. Should be an easy fix.

Could be a bushing going away too...I deal with Mike Hawker, the shop foreman. He's an AMG guru.

That seems a good description of a similar feeling on mine, here's the thread.

Here's the post.

It happened in the winter of '09-'10 and fixed sometime in early 2010.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the LS rear diff ... could it be a little tight until warmed up and pushing the car against the front suspension while turning the wheel?

The noise is definitley coming from the front of the car and you can feel the suspension bunching up and letting go in the 2 front wheels, so I am certain it is NOT from the Diff. I am going to take it to the dealer and see if I can re enact it. I would probably have to flat bed the car there since it only happens when the car is cold and has not been driven.

That issue would not appear to be temperature sensitive. I have the same problem as the op and its only during cold weather before car warms up when you turn the front wheels more than half way. I thought it may be due to the urethane bushings. I had mercedes check it out and they could find nothing wrong since the car had already been driven and suggested next time I leave the car overnight.
