CLK63 BS Battery

Hi all, I think Im going to need a new battery. Does anybody have any experience with lightweight battery alternatives, like Braille, or even lithium-ion replacements? If so, could you please share which particular size/capacity battery you chose, and how is it working out for you?

As you know, the battery is one huge heavy brick, and am wondering whether any of these lighter weight alternatives would work just as well. Size is not an issue, I can fabricate a new bracket for it. Thanks in advance!

I've gone through 2 Braille 21 lbs. and am trying an XS Power battery for the first time b/c the Braille 21 lbs. is/was backordered. They're ~$220/ea. and didn't last long for me and that's w/a trickle charger. Were it not for the smaller battery tray that was installed in my vehicle, I'd have stayed w/the normal sized battery. Just don't think its worth saving a few pounds. Yes the OEM is heavy but its optimally placed for weight distribution, if not access. Guess a Braille is good track day replacement to be swapped back afterwards.

Thanks for the info. I looked up XS Power batteries, which model are you going to try? They seem to have quite the variety. Do you think one of the lithium ion models would work with our charging system?

I found that taking the battery in and out of our cars can be quite the hassle. I ran optima and Braille for a bit, and found myself worrying about the car starting on a cold day more often than not.

I ended up switching to a interstate AGM (H6 size I believe) and have had a worry free 3 years. Unless it is a dedicated track car, I value the dependability over the weight savings.

Absolutely. I wasn't advocating for lightweights. My BS doesn't have the rear seat delete parts and I still wouldn't want to switch out batteries to save a few pounds. An M156 (w/a SC in my case) requires a lot of power to turn over. So I'd prefer to run a stock size w/greater CCA's and longer life.

Will one of the newer model Mercedes OEM car batteries work? The SLS uses a lightweight battery.

I believe the SLS is also an H6 battery, so if you do to your parts department you will likely get the same part number for the CLK BS and SLS battery.

maybe I should’ve specified the SLS black Series has a lightweight battery. I don’t know if the SLS other variations have a lightweight battery.

Yes, the SLS black series had a VERY lightweight lithium ion battery. It also has a third terminal on it, which left us guessing as to what it was for. I think it was for telling the computer how much charge is left in it.

Beware, though, I had to replace one on a previous SLS BS that we had, and it cost us $2700 from the dealer! So may not be a practical option. The XS Power S975 battery is a bargain at $1200.

:-P

the lower (rear center) panel pops out, it then exposes a bolt (torx?) to remove the upper panel. The felt/fabric you can I believe and then it's just a giant U shaped thing that holds the battery down

It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be.

I needed a torques and then popped the cover off.

After this, there were one nut on either side of the battery and two at the front. 12mm.

Job done!
