Yes, I had a 2015 CLS400 as well (until last week) and was able to get it upgraded a couple years ago. The dealer upgraded it for me although it did take a lot of going back and forth between the dealership an MB. At first they insisted it couldn’t be done, but I supplied them with documentation I had found online and eventually after about a week they figured it out.
You just have to insist that it can be done. It cost me somewhere around $150. There was a kit (with new cabling) that they installed and the rest was a software update. I used CarPlay almost everyday for the last 2 years and it was flawless.
I can't say my process was smooth. It took 4 trips to get it right. It seems the service center I've been going to, anything firmware or programing related, just dosn't seem to happen on the fist try. But the effort was worth it!
This is awesome. Any idea how I would find out if they have car play available for 2017 S-class (A217)? Also how do I know which command radio version I have? Thanks
I pulled this off of the internet. I would assume you have the NTG5*2 system as is says below that the 5*5 has it already. No confirmation, just a guess on my part. But your USB plugs, does one look like an ipad?
I have a 2015 550 and had a coding shop here in Toronto, install Carplay about a year ago and it has worked flawlessly since. I have an iPhone, however, it also works with Android. I use it primarily for listening to podcasts while driving, however, the Waze and Sygic GPS apps work perfectly, also. The touch screen would be handy, but to be honest, once you get accustomed to using the dial to navigate, its equally fast and convenient and the avoidance of finger marks on the screen is a bonus. If I recall, I paid $160 for complete installation, however, I have no idea what they charge now.
As for the question of whether or not its worth it, I guess it all depends on your intended use. I would also note that more and more apps are being developed with Carplay in mind, so there will be ongoing improved availability of content.
