Stage 2 Eurocharged No Downpipes

Contacted Eurocharged about if I needed any mods for stage 2, and they said no mods are required. I'm pretty sure stage 2 setups are downpipes+ performance air intakes? Should I go with their stage 2 with a stock exhaust?

It was Jerry who is from EC Houston.

He stated that “Because we have tested over and over and DP's don't actually make any power on this engine. Most shops just want to sell you the higher priced tune + hardware + labor”.

Would like your guys’ two cents on this. Kind of considering this upgrade.

Is yours a 400? I still would think downpipes would bring more power to that engine, But the catless downpipes on my Cls550 pertuned noticeably brought power. I think you need some sorts of “sport exhaust” at least for a stage two, maybe not necessarily downpipes but modification to the exhaust from everything I’ve read

Yes it's a 400 4matic. I don't think I'll be going catless as the 400 sounds worse, + the smell of gas? Not sure if I should go through with this with a stock exhaust haha.

I think the stage 2 tune kinda removes a lot of the restrictions and trust me those stock downpipes on your 400 are very restricting, IMO you gotta let those turbos breathe especially if you are interested in the power that comes with a stage 2 tune. Once again that’s just my opinion is to add some downpipes and not necessarily catless but less restrictive downpipes from the turbo back to muffler to get the best performance out of the vehicle and the tune. But if that’s not an option get the tune and let us know how it goes

To my understanding, if you are running rich, which is usually the case with ECU tunes, you'll have an excess amount of fuel and some fuel will not be burned in the combustion cycle. That unburnt fuel will travel and try to pass through the cats. The fuel will stick to the cats and with the hot exhaust gasses, the cats will get quite hot and clogged and, eventually, it'll toast the cats. The cats are supposed to stay dry.

Now, I wouldn't take a single person's word for it, no matter how experienced a person might be. It's better to do research on which route is better. Because it's your car/property after all. We could be wrong to tell you that you need cat-less downpipes or the tuner can be wrong that you don't need them. But if those cats fail with the tune after a few years, you'd have to pay a substantial amount to get new ones.

If you do want downpipes, it will be much cheaper if you can find a local shop to fabricate them for you. The guy I went to was charging $600 for the downpipes - labor and parts. Another shop was asking for $1k. A friend of mine got his done from a shop in LA for $500.

At least, that's my understanding. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, that might be true for your 400 engine, but I did feel some additional power to the wheels with the downpipes. Maybe not a substantial difference.

With catless dp's, people say you get a CEL because of it, but then they say that the tuner will turn the CEL for it off. So is the CEL off permanently, or is the CEL just off for the catless dp's? Because having the CEL off permanently would fail to alert for other failures in the drivetrain?

I believe they play around with the O2 sensors to trick them that the cats are still intact when the cats are not, so the air/fuel mixture remains constant, per the ECU tune stats. Otherwise, everything else should work fine. They only turn the O2 sensors into "dummies" so they can't tell if cats are there or not. Nothing else is turned off. I think there is another way to install the O2 sensors while not requiring a tune, it might be different for each car, or that might only work with older cars.

I never thought if it will impact the software to detect any other abnormalities with the drivetrain. Now I wonder if it will detect if the engine is running too rich or lean. But, I've read that the main purpose of the O2 sensors is to have the standard air/fuel mixture for better mileage and emissions. Even if you are running rich/lean, it should be easily identifiable. (now I'm curious to know more about this lol)

Cat-less downpipes won't bring smell in the cabin unless you have windows rolled down and if you make a stop after driving rough. I've had my windows open and all that and I never got any smell. Except when I was driving rough and exhaust pops and I made a stop right after. Otherwise, if windows closed, no smell in the cabin at all.

I was throwing a code with the catless dps bc of the o2 sensors were put in reversed and then switched em and I believe the cel went away I’m actually going to put my stock file back on in a few and I’ll let you know if the CEL is still on but from what I understand the tuner removes it on the tuned file if you are throwing a CEL but would still be on a stock file, someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I’m going to swap here in about 15 I’ll update

Edit no codes showing and I ran my computer and no codes as well. Wish it would of told me a code for my water pump malfunction 🤦‍♂️ anyway when I get my water pump installed here soon I’m going to drive it on stock file with my catless downpipes but I’m pretty sure there’s no code after we fixed the o2 sensor we had before the tune, I’m thinking whoever makes the downpipes makes a spot for the o2 like my fabricator did. If they are just pipes with no spots drilled for the o2 I believe is when the code has to be removed by the tuner not positive someone correct me if I’m wrong.

As I heard, the CEL will not pop up right away. My friend who got his DPs from LA drove ~90 miles back home with just Stage 1 tune without cats and O2 sensors intact. He had forgotten his Stage 2 ECU at home lol (he got the whole ECU instead of the handheld MyGenius device). He had no issues at all with that drive.

When I was inquiring about getting DPs fabricated with the dude asking 1k, he said you'll get CEL immediately and suffer power loss. However, when I actually got the DPs done for $600, the dude started the car and gave it a few revs and I left it on idle for a few minutes. No CEL at all (I did not upload the Stage 2 file yet). I did upload the file before I left the shop.

So my take is that O2 sensors and cats are pretty much non-functional at cold temps. Once they both reach their optimal temps to function properly that's when the system will detect if Cats are working or not. So you won't get a CEL right away. Bc when you start the car, it's cold, so it will run rich until it warms up.

@Idklol69 Also, you will notice the smell even with Stage 1 tune with cats in place. Because you are running rich and that unburnt fuel will exit via the exhaust. I had the smell on Stage 1 and it was only if you're outside, nothing in the cabin.

Really? I've honestly never smelt gas inside the cabin or when parking. Still undecided on this! $400 for stage 2 and it goes to 495 horsepower and 600lb/ft from 430hp/460lb/ft..

I had a small amount of smell bc I kept my windows open. After letting the exhaust do the pops and make a stop right after with windows down...i smelled it a little. Bc those pops are from the unburnt gas. But when those pops don't take place, then there is no smell. You will or should never get the smell with windows closed, no matter your driving habits.

It all depends on what just happened at that moment. Each driving scenario will be different.

These tunes and the power upgrades are fun. Stage 2 (cat-less) was a bit better in terms of slightly more power and more/better exhaust note. The only downside is that I have to visit the shop again when my smog comes due lol But I'm happy with the tunes.

Oh, it's probably because I don't have the pops and bangs map on. Good thing about where I'm at, there is no smog checking, so it's no hassle for those wanting to go catless.

What do you mean there is no smog checking? lol, Don't all the states have the same rules and regulations in regards to the smog certification? One thing is that if your car is under 4-6 yrs old, depending on state, you won't have to get it smogged bc it's just brand new. There's that grace period for newer cars. Once that ends, you have to get it smogged like any other car.

Does your region have different rules? Where are you located?

I havent read everything but I heard tuners are no longer gonna be allowed to disable the O2 sensors and so you'll be stuck with a light.

I also have heard over time that downpipes aren't worth it and gains and minimal, only some sound difference.

Also pop/bangs tune isn't healthy for engine/turbo so if possible I'd stick without it and save some $ and reliability.

Obviously I didn't read all of this so I'm not sure how far you are but that's what I've known to be true so far

Maybe this is the US only. Downpipes for the 400, EC stated that gains are indeed minimal, and the sound is raspy where some like it and some don't. The burble tune on my completely stock setup was really hard to hear, you'd have to have no music on to even hear it. Even when it was backfiring, I felt like the car was jerking every time the burbles started shooting, so I turned it off and got a new file written after I told EC (didn't test it). Not going with stage 2 anyways now, going with Eurocharged Canada Toronto's stage 1 for a better tune.

There is no downpipes that will bolt on to a cls400, the pipes will fit but you will have to cut and weld on the passenger side. Im am currently running full cls63 amg exhaust ( custom fitted) and have no rasp. i've definitely ran through a few different set ups. I will tell you the tune from stage 1 to stage 2 was definitely noticeable . Stock 1/4 mile at track was 13.7.. stage 1 was 13.0, stage 2 was 12.5 and stage 3 (current tune) is 11.8 best . no drag slip tho .. so i roll with the 12.1@119 that i actually have. I now have have draggy and jb4 to data log. Pretty confident mid 11's this year before turbo /fuel upgrades....stay tuned.

You're upgrading your turbos? How much was your stage 1 and stage 2 tune making n terms of hp/tq or whp/wtq? Once I switch to EC Canada's file, I plan on buying a dragy in the next couple of months to see what times I get. I do think I'll be able to get in the low 4's with just their stage 1, and low 12's for the 1/4 mile.

I found a video of a CLS400 4matic stage 1 I believe running 0-100's in 4.5-4.6 in consistent launches, he even brake boosted a lot of them. It's in a foreign language, just gotta skim through the video. His best quarter mile was 181kph(112.4mph) @ 12.6. It's probably one of those stage 1 tunes that are around 410 horsepower, and 430 pound feet.
