2015 CLS400 Spark plug replacement

I'm sure i'm not the first one running in this situation but i couldn't find any thread about it. I've tried to search OEM spark plugs for my car and it seems that they have been discontinued. What have you guys used as replacement?

Not sure what PN you're asking about, but the replacement PN is available on eBay now.

If not available online at a place like https://mbparts.mbusa.com/ I would call my local dealer.

I checked exactly at a place like the site you posted, and that's where the part is discontinued. Working with couple other sellers right now. Amusing enough, went to the local Napa Autoparts and AutoZone and both said that only OEM are being sold for the vehicle, no aftermarket, and they have only 4 per area. If I need 6 I'll have to order. The sparks are laser iridium - something new for me.

Any way around, does anyone have the torque specs for the plugs when replacing?

Please post your VIN for the torque spec.

Did you call a dealer for spark plugs? That's what I would do. Pay the price and use the right parts.

Dealer is my last resort. Don't feel like overpaying double the price. And considering all other part stores give me same part number / description, I'm pretty sure they got it right by now.

Alrighty, so update for others who'll try to do it: I was not able to pull the coils off the plugs.... I got to the point where I was afraid to pull harder so I don't break it. And it was the same on two coils. All the rest of the process is very easy, maybe 10 min to get to coils. So I guess I'll have to take it to a shop for them to do it. Bummer.....

I've found OEM on Ebay, that was the easy part.

The OEM part is an NGK 95875 I believe.
Compare the two parts and only difference should be the MB Star symbol printed on the 'Mercedes' part.

You can buy them here:

Yes, you will indeed break the spark plug boot! That's what happened to me. The dielectric grease they originally used will dry out over time and become like glue. MB acknowledge as much when they switched to a different grease. When I originally started the job, the engine was warm, and the 1st couple of boots came off easily enough. I returned to the task when the engine cooled, and found it very difficult. The last one, against the firewall, was impossible. The lack of space prevented me from pulling enough to free it. I finally used a heat gun to warm it up and was able to free it, but it was a struggle.

Heat definitely softens the 'glue'. You need to use some pry tools to do it. There is a good video on YouTube that demonstrates the technique.

I had to use the pry bar to reach the coils near the firewall. It was definitely a struggle. Was afraid I might break the coil, but went for it anyway lol. The coil was fine.

So do you use grease on it when you put the coils back in so it doesn't glue-up like that in the future?

I used regular dielectric grease from the auto parts store (Permatex, I think).

So I was just quoted $600 for spark plug replacement by my local dealer!!! Guess I'll be busy for a weekend afternoon. With regard to the coils getting stuck, will I still have an issue if I just change the plugs with a hot engine (after driving an hour)? I've done plugs in the past on my 07' CLK and never had any issue.

$600 from a dealer sounds about right. At a good indy shop you can expect around half of that.

All the information that I've found says the engine might be warm, not hot. It might be hard to get the plugs out since they might expand from being hot. In my case I ended up taking to a shop that was recommended by my suspension mechanic. Ended up paying $800 for spark plugs replacement, coolant and transmission flush + filter, and the shop gives 2 years warranty on their labor

Regards

Pull the coils out with the engine as warm as you can manage. MB sells a grease that is supposed to be used on the coil boots, it's neon green, I have several of them and use them on most of my spark plug changes on different cars. They even have a spec for it, 1g per coil. One tube should do 10 plugs at that spec.

It's very possible to break the boots as they do adhere to the plugs very well. The boots are replaceable without changing coils if needed, and aren't too expensive.

How many miles are on your guys' CLS400's? Did you notice any signs of the spark plugs needing to be changed or are you just changing them?

I have a 2017 CLS550 that required B5 service recently. They said that called for spark plugs which would have cost nearly $1,000. I only had 45,000 miles so told them no way am I going to have a spark plug change. In fact, unless the car really runs badly or balks I will never get plugs since I will probably trade it next year.

I ended up replacing them at 55k miles, since it was a more major service any way - plugs, transmission flush and coolant flush. Can't say they were worn out, but dark enough for me to replace any way. I'd rather pay $150-200 for peace of mind for another 50k than just waiting for the plugs to go bad. Not saying they wouldn't last another 20-30k, but it's a price I can live with

For some reason forgot the brake fluid flush... Not good... gotta go back to the shop...
